It was an assasination and the motive was to eliminate him. The politics of elimination is not unknown in the history and when people in power tend to become very popular & powerful there is always a section of people whoare not happy with that and when they are unable to do something effective the last resort is elimination.
The reasons for the Gandhi's assasination were many including his popularity, acceptance etc and above all a perceived notion that he had betrayed the Hindus by agreeing to the partition of India & Pakistan and even then allowing the Muslims to stay in India.
In any case, it was all a politically motivated campaign and he had to pay the price in the shape of loss of life.

There have been three Gandhis assassinated in the course of India's history: Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi. Neither was massacred. A massacre is the killing of several or many people at the same time. You can't massacre on person.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated because he was perceived to have betrayed his fellow Hindus in their conflict after India's independence with the Muslim minority. I'm not sure why Indira and Rajiv Gandhi were assassinated.

After his triumphant campaign to coerce the British to leave India, sadly India again returned to factional in-fighting in an attempt to establish its first government. He was assassinated by a man who felt that Gandhi was making too many concessions to one group over another. (1948)

It is a commonly believed that her ordering of the invasion of the Holy Shrine of the Sikhs, The Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab, India, resulting the deaths of many innocent people and much destruction of historical and sacred placed, caused the wrath of the followers of the Sikh way of life and her own body guards who were Sikhs assasinated her. One wring deed does not justify another ..... but this in unfortuantely how polictics (poly tics) are... sad results of both incidents. We pray for healing and forgiveness. The Sikh people are a very proud and decent nation and their feelings, inspite of long lived loyalty to their country, were hurt. India has a proud history of tolerance, peace and joyful coexistence. Pray for everlasting peace in the hearts of people and good feeling for all. We are all one, and children of One.
