If German Shepards came from Germany and Collies from Scotland, are there any breeds that originated in America?

American Cocker Spaniels originated in America from the selected breeding of certain English Cockers.
Also Rat Terriers originated in America, though they have close ties to Fox Terriers.
Contrary to popular believe Pit Bulls, though once the "all American dog" originally were called "Bull & Terrier" dogs, which were brought over by the Irish and English.
I'm not sure how many more offhand, but I know there are more!

Two of the three "pit bull" breeds originated in America. Staffordshire Bull Terriers (Staffie) were developed in England in the 19th century from crosses between Bulldogs and various terriers for the then popular sport of bull baiting. The Staffie was brought to the US where the breed was preferred by American breeders who increased it's weight and gave it a larger head. Now recognized as a separate breed the American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff) is slightly larger than it's British cousin, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. After dog fighting was banned in the US in 1900, two strains of these dogs were developed, a show strain and a fighting dog strain. The show strain was labeled the American Staffordshire Terrier and the fighting dog strain was labeled the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT). The two are now being recognized as separate breeds. And I have to add that today the APBT is being bred with the same gentle qualities as the AmStaff. They both make wonderful pets with the right kind of owner. I also have to add that none of the "pit bull" breeds were ever bred for human aggression. In fact, they were specifically bred against human aggression! Like any breed of dog, a healthy "pit bull" that is properly raised will remain loving and friendly. In the past 20 years, we have seen some sad examples of poorly bred and badly treated dogs that are by products of irresponsible "backyard breeders" and cruel and abusive homes. These improperly raised, unsocialized creatures can show temperaments far removed from the traditional authentic "pit bulls." Do not confuse these unfortunate misbreds with the HUGE majority of well-loved "pit bulls" in this country that remain solid in temperament, affectionate, trustworthy and friendly to their dying day.

American Staffordshire Terrier, Canis Panther, Carolina Dogs, Redtick hounds, Bluetick hounds, Walker coonhounds, Black and Tan hound, Blackmouth Cur, Husky, American Bulldog, American White Shepherd, Boston Terrier...that's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there are more.

edited to add: Yes Leashedforlife I am aware that the American White Shepherd is NOT a breed recognized by the AKC. The asker did not say they only wanted to know the breeds recognized by the AKC. The AWS is registerable with the UKC. Like you pointed out, many of the breeds you listed are in fact NOT AKC breeds. The AKC is not the know all or end all.
Also, for another poster, If you wish to cut and paste what you read off another website it would be wise to list the source. If not, that is a violation of copyright and it makes you look like a fool.

(ummm...
the 'American White Shepherd' is a GSD with a white coat!
AKC doesn't permit white dogs in the breed-ring;
they're disqualified under the GSD Club of America's breed-standard,
and the white color is a simple recessive,
present in the breed when they arrived.)

Boykin Spaniel, American Water Spaniel,
Boston BULL AND Terrier, Black and Tan Coonhound,
Plott (German roots), American Foxhound (Brit and French roots),
Feist, Blackmouthed Yellow Cur, Alaskan Husky,
(American aka Black-masked) Akita as distinguished from traditional white-masked Akitas as seen in Japan (C.O.O.),
Chesapeake Bay Retriever,
Labradors (origin Canada, which is also AMERICA, as in 'north'),
Catahoula Leopard, Alapaha Bulldog, American Bulldog,
Australian Shepherd (roots in Basque, then Aus,
but developed in USA when Basque shepherds
brought them here in late 1700's),
mini-Aus Shepherds,
Black and Tan Rat Terriers aka 'Teddy' or Roosevelt Terriers
(plz see pics of Teddy in Africa on safari; his dog is in many),
and many others.

most ARE NOT 'AKC'-recognized;
many are regional or traditional working breeds.
