Most people think that our activities are causing climate change. Obviously this is by accident, but it seems to me that the fact that we change the climate, even by accident, means we can change it on purpose. Do you think that this is something that is close to being possible?

Added 3 Oct: Thanks for some interesting answers. Not sure about the whole Gaia-thought control concept but hey, if it works for you....

we are influencing the environment.

it's called the green house effect caused by carbon.a large percent of the rays from our sun are meant to bounce off the earth and go back into the atmosphere. BUT all the carbon we ahve produced (which makes the atmosphere thicker) is holding all the rays in...which is why our climate is getting hotter. as the climate gets hotter the glaciers melt and the process is sped up because they normally act as a mirror deflecting the sun...but since the ice is melting and putting water in its place the water soaks in the heat and melts the ice faster.

i don't think this will be a problem ONLY for our great grandchildren OR our grandchildren but our children and us.

if we don't reverse the carbon/gases we are putting in the atmosphere within 20 years our planet will go insane...and possibly throw us into another ice age.....

i know it sounds weird talking about extreme heats and ice ages in the same sentence but if you watch "an inconvenient truth" it will explain everything on a more scientifical level!!!

I think it is possible to some extent. A few years ago I was at the UN website scanning some of the Treaties and came across a treaty dealing with weather control. I was shocked they had a treaty on this! So if it is not possible why is a treaty necessary?

Control appears impossible.
Influence appears possible.
We may be able to influence the weather with our activities, pollution, deforestation and industrial development. However, what happens to the weather after our influence appears to be beyond our control.
Perhaps in the distant future, if we survive the radical changes our world is going through now, and these radical changes can be tempered by combatting global warming, control may be more possible.

Sure.

But is a supremely dangerous thing to try. We would have little control over how much we changed it.

It's far better for us to keep control of climate natural. We're messing it up right now, and we need to stop that, not try to do it more.

I think humans can change climate locally by deforestation and other land use changes. But on a global scale, there is no way. We are at the mercy of the sun, ice and oceans, the global surface temperature trend cannot even be trusted.

I think concrete, asphalt and air conditioners placed next to thermometers will make it appear warmer than it really is.

No I don't think it would be possible to change the climate. We can now change it in an isolated environment but that would be impossible out in the open.I don't think we could create an environment on a big enough scale to do any good.
I do believe we could change the environment destructively by having a nuclear war

Have you ever heard the phrase "giant uncontrolled global experiment"?

We can try. We probably will try if things get bad enough. This guy is not waiting. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/07/070725-iron-ocean.html

Personally, I think every intervention will lead to greater, even more intractable problems. We should be doing less, not more.

We DO control the climate, as well as all world events through the collective consciousness and the energy vibrations that we emit both as individuals and societies. The events around us are only reflections of our inner thoughts and attitudes. Unfortunately, it seems that the predominant attitude is one of fear, not love, which is why we're seeing what we're seeing. But one by one, we can change this.

NO, unless we can learn how to stop the sun from getting larger and hotter. DON'T forget about 12-21-2012.
