You're thinking of Naegleria fowleri. It is endemic in many regions, not just Thailand. It just so happens that with greater biodiversity and hospitable conditions, a variety of animals, plants and microbes thrive in tropical places like Thailand.
Is there a cure for Naegleria? Because it is so rare, has such a rapid and high case fatality, it's hard to determine whether current treatments have been effective. A doctor would likely administer some kind of microbicide, but by the time infection becomes evident, symptoms have usually progressed too far to recover.
