Yes, arrive to the airport atleast an hour and a half before departure. Buy your own food because airlines now in days only provide drinks and peanuts. Bring your own pillow and blanket if you plan to sleep on the plane, which I doubt you will want to considering it's your first time. Dress comfortable. If you can, I know this is going to sound gross of me to say but if you can, do the #2 before you go on the plane. Read the rules of flying on your airliner's website. Right now, they just announced that no one can take "toys" on the plane like little remote control toys. Don't take any liquids as your carry on. That's about it! Don't be late on to your gate....they start to board 30 minutes before take off! :)

I guess your still in your teens, if I'm wrong then no insult intended.

Flying is no big deal. Safer than crossing the street.

The flight itself will take at least 6 hours maybe 7 depending on the wind.

Biggest problems are boredom and de-hydration so take your iPod or DVD player. The cabin staff will tell you when it's OK to use them, and make sure you have enough to drink.

You will not be allowed to take any significant amount of water on board. No problem really, just ask the stewardess if you feel thirsty, she'll take good care of you.

A window seat is best. Even if you don't get a decent view outside, you don't get disturbed every time a passenger moves past you.

Getting to Indio from LAX by public transportation is confusing, time consuming, frustrating and ultimately, expensive. DO NOT attempt to go to the L.A. Greyhound station. It is in a very disreputable part of the city, homeless, many of whom are schizophrenic, roam the area begging. The station itself is dirty and there are sleazy men who hang out there and try to lure young travelers into porn and prostitution. (Sound like a plot for a bad TV movie, but it's true.) The easiest, and least expensive, way to get to Indio would be to rent a car at LAX and drive there. You can rent economy cars rather inexpensively. I've used Enterprise a couple of times and they have very good customer service.

Take something to eat. These days the airlines hardly have anything at all. So it's best you take something on board in case you are hungry.
Take something to read or listen to in case you don't like the entertainment on offer.
If you are nervous, mention to the F/A's that it's your first time traveling by air. Usually F/A's don't mind looking out for someone who's a bit nervous.
Have a good flight!

Sit on the aisle if you can. Gives you easier access to bathrooms. Take food, snacks. Take a good book, a DVD player & movie, check the airlines website to see what they are showing, take a sweater in case it gets cold (it often does). If you are taking a redeye, also take a mask to keep out light, and earplugs to keep out noise. Take some hard candy to suck on at beginning and ending of flight to normalize ear pressure. Take an mp3 if you want to listen to music. It's a long flight from NJ to LA, so be prepared to change from DVD to book, to others, etc.

Make sure you don't pack anything of value like a digital camera, etc. in your checked baggage. Every few months or so they are arresting TSA baggage inspectors at Liberty Airport in Newark. Keep that stuff in your carry-on.
