Is there any software out there available to the average consumer that is capable of photo recognition?

In other words, if you had one file that contained 1,000 pictures from a camera. You knew that some of them were duplicates even though they did not have the same file name. The only way I can think of being able to solve this problem would be to scrub it against software that could visually recognize duplicates.
