Please help me, my 10 month old great dane has a broken leg, he seemed fine until last night, i have not slept in more than 25hours and its just getting rediculous. hes on a pain killer which seems to help a TINY BIT but My hubby and i have baby'd him since he was little and he is now just a big sook. i cant leave his side without him trying to follow me, but than i have to pick him up and lay him down again as he finds it too hard to sit down himself. when he tries, he ends up sitting on his leg and yalping till i help him .....
the problem is im nearly 8months pregnant and i just cant be lifting him too much.....since im home alone during the days, what do i do????
will he learn to sit down himself and will he get use to the cast that is on his leg?
please help me im soooo tired... the vet says he should be better in 4 weeks, but i cant be putting my body under this much stress at the moment....
HELP HELP HELP!!!

Are you crazy???
Does he have a crate? You need to put a nice fluffy bed and big shoulder bone in there for him, and SHUT THE DOOR! Go out of the house if you can't take the whining. When you get home, don't open the crate door until he's calm and quiet. Walk away if he won't settle, then come back in a few mins and try again. He'll learn quickly if you're consistent.
You're doing this to yourself, and you're not doing him a favor. What if the baby's allergic and you had to give him (the dog, not the baby) up? Do you think the next family is going to want a dog who can't be alone for 5 minutes?
Don't up the dose of pain killer. He needs to learn to stay where he is for more than 2 minutes. You're going to hurt the baby if you don't stop trying to lift a 100 lb dog....

I'd call the vet and ask about the dosing on the painkiller. Maybe he can up the dose a little to help out more. Make sure you tell the vet what you are going through.
Yes, he will learn that it hurts when he tries to laydown a certain way and he'll find another way to help himself. Don't worry, he is very capable of this himself. It may take a few days but he'll catch on fast. Just try to make sure he has a thick orthopedic bed to lay on, it will help relieve some pressure points that can cause further discomfort. Good luck and congratulations on your baby...now go take care of you ;).
P.S. Good for you for doing your very best to make sure your dog is comfy! I know how hard it was for me to lift a 60 lb. dog at 8 mo. preg and I don't want to imagine what it would've been like for a GD! Wheeew!

Stop lifting him! You don't need a bad back in addition to a dog with a broken leg and a newborn on the way! He sounds just like my cat,who broke his leg when he was 8 months old.He would NOT walk on it,he ROLLED around the house for about 10 days and would scream and hiss at his leg as if he were possessed! My vet said that he was the strangest cat she had ever seen, because he only had a hairline fracture,so he shouldn't have been in that much pain, but that some animals are just more sensitive to discomfort, while others won't make a sound even though they are in horrific pain.I think your dog is a sissy, like my cat! Just stop babying him, give him plenty of chew toys and Kongs ,stuffed with treats, to keep his mind off of his leg,and he should learn to live with it in a few days or so.Good luck!

He will get used to it, Right now he is just scared and in pain and nt really sure what is happening to him. You have to stop trying to pick him up, but pet him where he is on the floor and reassure him in a clam soothing voice. A little patience goes a long way in a situation like ths and I know that is hard too.

hes spoiled....if you stop picking him up he will get the hang of doing it himself plus he will be able to use his leg sooner with less muscle mass loss when the cast comes off..... stop lifting the big ole thing or you're going to hurt your back i'm a little over 7 months pregnant myself and i can tell ya...lifting is a big no no, especially a big ole baby who WILL do it himself if you make him.
congrats on your lil one!!! and good luck with your big one lol

how can he get used to the cast when you are "babying" him all the time? Just let the dog figure it out and if necessary, maybe the vet can adjust the cast so it is more manageable for your dog.
