The Church has the wealth it has because of what the people give to the Church, not because the Church has taken it. Many of the gifts given to the Church over the centuries, particularly works of art, were inspired by the artisan's faith.
It makes no sense for the Church to "give them away, simply because some people think (incorrectly) that it's the right thing to do.
Those who make such a claim need to gather all their treasured possessions - and GIFTS - and sell all of them and give the money to the poor BEFORE they claim the Church should do the same.

Let's pick a random Chalice. This one here happens to be a gift from France, crafted in 1826, in commemoration of the Easter Holiday. In modern US Dollars, it is appraised at 12.7 Million dollars.
The Church has preserved this magnificent work of art, and has on staff many goldsmiths, archivists, archeologists, and museum experts, who all work together to ensure that future generations will benefit from this piece of artistic history. From time to time, it may even be used in services.
However, the church buckles to this pressure, and sells it off to a private collector. The private collector happens to be non-Catholic, and chooses to have it melted down and recast as an erotic, tasteless sculpture for his wife, and the jewels are sold off. The collector pays the 12.7 million to the Vatican, and the Vatican distributes this wealth to the poor.
Problem:
1. No value has been created, but artistic value has been lost.
2. A piece of historic evidence has been lost.
3. The 12.7 the collector paid could have just as easily been distributed to charity by the collector, cutting out the Vatican as a middle man.
4. The Church has abdicated a responsibility to preserve history that it is under no compunction to observe and has taken on entirely out of historic responsibility.
In short, there is no consequence for which selling it is superior to keeping it.

They should not see any of their "holy relics", but should instead pay for the sins committed in the name of man out of their vast coffers and treasury. These sins include the abuse of children at the hands of priests, the forgival of sins for money, etc.
