It's not a dumb question...

The bottom part of the oven, where the little door is, that's your broiler. The big door, that's the oven. The casserole dish can be baked.

The broiler is used for flame cooking meats, or making garlic bread... kind of like an upside down BBQ grill... sorta..

Hope that helps...

Broiler Vs Oven

A broiler is in an oven, it's just the top heating element in a n electric oven and the bottom drawer in a gas stove.
The casserole dish you purchased can be cooked in the oven, Just do not use any temperature above what the box says. The reason is that the tray it's made in will either melt or catch fire in a broiler because the temperature is about 500 degrees.
Just put you dish on a pizza pan and cool at recommend settings.

Broiler is the part or setting on the oven that gives you direct hot heat. For an electric oven, it's the top element and for a gas stove, it's directly underneath the burner unit.

An oven works by heating the entire oven and bringing the heat to a uniform temperature. For an electric oven, it's the bottom heating element. On a gas stove, the burner is below the floor of the oven where heat is indirect.

For your casserole dish, "No Broiler" means that you should not directly in a heat source. Near the bottom heating element of a stove is okay since it's not a high heat source.

An oven cooks by heating the air, which heats the food. A broiler cooks by exposing the food to radiant heat from the heating element itself, usually above--like a charcoal grill only upside-down. Broiling is good for thin things with a lot of surface, like steaks or hamburgers. It wouldn't be the best thing for yams, it would just cook them on top. But after baking the yams in a conventional way, you could turn the broiler on for a few minutes to brown the top of the yams.

Yes you can bake in it. The oven is the large space, usually uder a cooktop in a range, in which the entire volume has the temperture raised, gernerally by heat from underneath, thus causing indirect heat.. In that same space there is a heat source at the top, this is the broiler. It throws heat directly at the food, causing browning, etc., whcih often is a good thing. The reason your dish says no broililing is because the heat being thrown dirctly at the food/dish is a lot higher, because of the direct heat.

No broiler means, don't subject your casserole to extreme heat, you have to check from the manufacture the heat that your tools can withstand,Oven can have more than 500 deg F in temperature depending on the kinds, Unknowingly if the heat that your casserole is less than what your baking is required, you tools might liquefied or burnt.

Be carefull and happy baking
