If you NEED a reason just say target practice and self defense. That will work.

Anglican leaders from around the world have clearly stated their opposition to the "victimisation or diminishment" of gays and lesbians, saying demonising and persecuting them was "totally against Christian charity and basic principles of pastoral care". "We say that no one should have to live in fear because of the bigotry of others." The mormons poured millions into forcing through prop 8 in CA: to ban gay marriage. In August 2010 the court held that to be unconstitutional. On 15 June 2011 the San Francisco court upheld that decision because it violates the constitutional rights of citizens. On 7 February 2012 the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals struck the California law again finding that the California state constitution banning same-sex marriage violated principles of due process and equal protection under the law. The court found that the ban violates equality laws to target a minority group and withdraw a right that it possessed, without a legitimate reason for doing so. Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California. The constitution simply does not allow for laws of this sort. It is now awaiting the Supreme Court verdict which is expected to uphold the early court decision. If that happens then gay marriage will become legal everywhere and that will be marriage and not civil partnership! In the UK The intolerance, bigotry and homophobia from Christians resulted in it being classed as a hate crime with severe sentences. It has led to the government framing legislation which if enacted will replace "Civil Partnership" with full marriage. The loving god works in mysterious ways.

In New York State (With exception of New York city) as well as Maryland where I live you need a valid reason other that "I want one" or "target practice", to get a Concealed Weapon Permit. Your valid reason is used in consideration to determine if you get a "restricted" permit or or a "less-restricted" state wide permit. Valid reason examples could be, that you carry large sums of money. You have a need for personal protection in regards to your job responsibilities (Plain Clothes Security, Bodyguard, Bank Official etc))
You are a former/retired Police Officer or Law Enforcement Official (With documents to prove it) Judicial responsibilities (Judges) or Officers of the Court (Bailiff's or Court Security Officers) Being physically disabled with a history of being "victimized" and unable to defend yourself thru conventional means. These are just a few examples.
The requirements are different in many other states. The state legislature determines what is an "acceptable" reason
on a state by state basis.....

If you already have a permit for possession, you'll need a justifiable reason to carry. If you carry and money or important business records, I know you can say that. Depending on where you're at, you might try saying you're worried about anti-gay violence, or if you're a minority you could also use that to your advantage, claiming you're being harassed by bigots. You just need to come up with a threat that someone might pose to you and sell it.
If you say target practice your permit will be restricted for to and from ranges, if you say family defense it'll be an in home permit only.

An old friend of mine works in a mental health hospital as a male nurse. His employment and the nature of his patients (and their many threats) were the reasons he cited for his concealed carry permit; which was approved. He lives in Syracuse, NY.
