Kim Jong Il is the son of Kim Il Sung. The latter gentleman started the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK) after World War Two when the Korean Peninsula was divided into two nations. Kim Il Sung was known as the "Great Leader" and his son is known as the "Dear Leader". Kim Jong Il, besides holding the post as ultimate leader of the DPRK, is also the head of the Peoples Army and the head of the Korean Workers Party (the communist party which rules the North).
