You can have your dog spayed while she is in heat, but it costs a little extra. I have been in the veterinarian field for many years and I can assure you there is minimal risk. It would be much riskier if you opted not to have her spayed and she ended up with an unwanted pregnancy. Good for you for being a responsible pet owner and having her spayed.

I have had a 2 1/2 lb male neutered anda 3 lb ,ale as well as 2 three lb females spayed. No problems. There is always a chance something will go wrong, no matter what the size.

im glad someone asked this question as i am all to familiar with the risks the vets never tell you about. i bred german shepherds for a while. i feel torn between yes and no getting dogs fixed males or females. you need to speak with a vet but they will only tell you things you want to hear, they rarely go into what MIGHT have a chance of happening. let me give you my story and you be the judge.your dog will either be fine but gain weight (99 percent of the time happens everyone i know that has gotten their dog fixed it has gotten fatno matter what the vet says) two things can happen to a female after getting fixed. and i wish they would have told me the risks before. she can get a really bad internal infection or second which is what happened to my dog the getting fixed affected the way she walked and she got within a year where she couldnt walk up and down steps and i had to put her to sleep. also she lost so much blood she became anemic and they had to give her a blood transfusion after the surgery. she was only just over 5 years old. hopefully nothing like this will happen to your dog and my dog was just of the few but i really think that vets need to be more open and stop treating spaying and neutering as an every day kind of surgery. i had to put my girl dog to sleep a year after the surgery because of all the complications

there is always some risk with any anesthetic proceedure.

your dog is 3 lbs? your vet should run bloodwork before the surgery to make sure your dogs internal systems are functioning well. your vet should also use an appropriate anesthetic and preanesthetic. your vet should make sure your little one is surrounded by hot water bottles to keep her temp up. temperature drops normally with anesthesia so it is important that small animals stay warm. at my veterinarian they will offer small animals like yours a tiny amount of food once they are awake so that their bloodsugar does not become low.

if your little ones bloodwork and presurgical exam are good, then she should do just fine with her spay.

You should have some concerns due to her weight.
A friend of mine has an extremely small dog and when she started to call around, asking questions about specific concerns one vet flat out told her to try to find someone, who had experience with small animals.

The risks come from using anesthesia on very small dogs.

You might want to call around and ask the vets if they have experience with low weight dogs.

G'luck

BTW, her dog is 3.5 lbs.

Your dog should be spay before she comes in heat, because female dogs that have heat cycles have more risk of breast cancer than those that don't have them. Do it now, the surgery is safe, worry more about cancer.
