Is it true that smoking cigarettes can make you lose weight? If so, does the same principle apply to cigars?

Thank you all for assuming that I, myself, am a smoker or that I plan on taking up this filthy habit as an alternative to diet and exercise. I happen to be doing a little research out of simple curiosity, not necessarily to be put to my own use. I find it interesting, however, that each of your responses was drenched in prejudice based on the fact that you thought I smoked or was planning on smoking in an attempt to lose weight. I believe the purpose of this particular website is to supply genuine answers without fear of judgement, hence the anonymity of it. Next time you answer a question, please try not to jump to conclusions. An honest answer will most likely be much more appreciated than the most likely offensive one which would have been given otherwise.

Cigarettes are not healthy for you however smokers can occupy their mouth and use cigarettes as a substitute something else to do with their mouth hense, smokers who quit often gain weight because they are losing an oral fixation habit and usually end up substituting putting food in their mouth instead of a cigarette. The opposite is also true. Some will substitute a cigarette in their mouth for food, and supply a drink, coffee, or soda to fill the stomach up. Neither of these actually benefit the body however some people who smoke are not skinny at all and i would recommend a totally different diet plan.

Well, yes. They do suppress appetite. Nicotine also acts on the pleasure center of the brain and it prompts receptors for it to grow in your body. The more you smoke, the more receptors appear (and they do disappear again when you quit). The danger in smoking is much like eating junk (sugar and fat). Anything that gives us pleasure, makes us want more of it. Here's the thing. You could probably get very old smoking if you smoked good tobacco, like some cigars, but the regular cigarettes on the market contain so much in the way of cancer causing garbage like tar, preservatives, etc., that it's not worth getting hooked.
As a means of losing weight..hmm.. I think exercise, which is an appetite suppressant as well, would be the better choice.

Cigarettes act as an appetite suppressant and they speed up your metabolism. However you don't lose weight by smoking unless you start replacing meals with smokes, which I do not recommend. The whole metabolism thing just means you gain some weight when you give up. When I first started smoking I didn't lose any weight at all, but I gained 5lbs within a few days of quitting. So yeah, risking cancer and the myriad other ill effects, plus gaining weight when you quit... Not really worth risking it just to see if you lose a few pounds is it?

and you want to lose weight by taking up a bad habit?
diet and exercise will make you skinny or keep you at a level of weight you're comfortable with. There is no magic pill to make you thin. And smoking, while it may keep your weight down, is just bad for you.
My mom has always been thin. She has smoked for over 60 years. She now has COPD and needs an inhaler to breathe. When she started smoking, it was "fashionable" back in the day when they didn't know as much about the dangers of smoking as they do now.
Diet and exercise, as I stated above, is the only way you'll stay thin.

The only way they make you skinny is as a side effect of the chemotherapy used to treat the cancer caused by smoking. It is much easier and much more healthy to just walk a couple miles a day.
