Posted a recipe question earlier and got the reply in 'cups' and ounces. I'm old enough to know what an ounce is but how much is a cup in grams? Then I can make the delicious recipe, thank you!

Oh, no! This is much more complicated than I realised. This time I want to weigh cornflakes but I am always struggling with US recipes.

I suppose I will have to buy cup measures one day - be easier than waiting for the US to go metric!

A cup is 8 ounces!
A cup is 236. ml
A cup is 226 grams: milli liters and grams are so close that is probably the reason your measuring cup doesn't have grams on it.
A cup equal to 48 teaspoons
A cup equal to 16 tablespoons
A ounce equal to 6 teaspoons
A teaspoon roughly equals to 4.7 grams
! tablespoon roughly equals to 14 grams
A ounce equal to 2 tablespoons
Had to do some digging to fine that one. grams is thought of as a unit of weight not volume.
1pound = 454 grams
1 pound = 16 ounces
Hope that helps.

1 cup is 237 ml. But if you're measuring a dry ingredient, you'll need to use a conversion chart to grams that varies based on the weight of the specific item. Just type in how many grams is 1 cup of flour - or 1 cup of brown sugar, etc.

Ok, well if you're talking about mL thats easy. 250mL. However, a cup of say popcorn isn't the same as a cup of yogurt. Its awful, I know. So basically I'd go with a cup being equal to 8oz and 32g per ounce so about 256 grams.. Or, better yet, get a container that will measure out 250mL which you can then use as a cup of dry measure.

A "cup" is a unit of volume (for liquid), rather than mass, so it doesn't convert. The real answer is that it depends on what you are measuring, as the weight could be different.
1 cup = 8 fluid oz.
What are you specifically measuring for your recipe? Water is roughly 16 fl oz. = 1 lb., so perhaps you can guess based on how much your material weighs relative to water?
1 cup = 8 fl. oz ~= .5 pound(lb) = ~= 225g
Good luck!

A cup is about 240 ml in size, and if you fill it with water, it's about 240 grams of water. A cup of oil weighs a lot less, and a cup of salt weights a lot more.

as another answerer said a cup concernes the volume not a weight. it's the volume of a regular coffee cup (250 ml.)
Thus if they ask for a cup of something simply take a coffee cup fill with the ingredient and add to the recipe.
Perfect every time.

Is volume not weight. You wouldn't expect a cup full of feathers weight the same as a cup full of lead, would you? Neither will sugar and flour. In any case, I believe an American cup is 250ml, a bit less (negligible) than half a pint.
