how often to wake them up to use the bathroom

2007-10-02 10:50:54 · 10 answers · asked by Shakera S 1 in Pregnancy & Parenting Toddler & Preschooler

Thanks for all the replys, but maybe I should have added that she basically woke up around her 1st b-day and started going to the bathroom by herself. During that time she did not have any accidents, until she was about 2 and a half. She will be 4 in 4 months, and i am just wondering how to get her back on track. I am not sure what knocked her off track, but we have had some trematic things happen this year, maybe I can blame it on that. I just do not want her to start feeling bad about herself over this.

Don't wake them up, just use pull-ups as backup. My 3 year old son is dry 95% of the time in the morning, but why not use pullups for the 5% risk? We've tapered him off the habit of sucking down too much water before bedtime and he doesn't like to go in his pullups anyway. It's a self-solving problem, and the other person is right - they won't go to college in diapers.

My nephew Mark was a bed wetter until he was 6. There were no outward reasons for it and his pediatrician attributed it to either him having a small bladder or having a nervous system that was slow to develop making it impossible for him to stay dry while asleep. My sister was single working mom and couldn't keep up with soaked bed sheets every night so she had very little choice to put Mark in diapers at bed time. Even though he had pretty much stopped wetting the bed by the time he was 6 or 7, Mark had occasional accidents and my sister kept him in diapers at bed time for until he in the 3rd grade and completely dry. Mark is 26 years old now and seems to be doing fine. I don't think you need to do anything like disturb a toddlers sleeping just for the sake of trying to condition the child to remain dry at night. Each child will mature at his own pace and I think being a patient, nurturing mom is the best thing that you can do.

You don't wake them up just to use the bathroom. When they are asleep leave them be.

don't give them too much water before bedtime.Get them to use the bathroom before going to bed. Just like get them to brush their teeth before going to bed. Allow 30 minutes for this and when they have done all the praying, brushing teeth, going to the bathroom, kissing goodnights, then no excuse to get up the bed as soon as they lied down. You have to make these their habit. It will take a month to get this habit and you have to be firm every night. Once it is settled on their mind, you don't have to tell them, they will reliegiously do all these until they have kids of their own.

And when they say, there's nothing, don't believe them, because there will be a thing.

If they wake up dry several mornings in a row then its time to take off the diapers/pull ups. Until then, they dont have the control to keep dry. Dont wake them up to go to the bathroom. Leave a night light on in case they wake up themselves to go. Try to limit the liquids after dinner to make things a little easier.

No liquids for a few hours before bed. Get pull ups or other night diapers, until they keep dry. Or if you are a person who wakes up to go, wake up the child to go at the same time. I did this with my son...he would zombie in go and then go right back to bed. It worked till he learned not to go at night. Good Luck!

My son is 5 and a bed wetter. I have him in diapers so he gets a full nights rest instead of waking him and interrupting his sleep. Many kids wet the bed at night especially boys its not uncommon. I disagree with waking them or let them go to bed with out protection and expect them to change sheets in the middle of the night because of an accident. They wont go to college in diapers so why not let everyone get a restful sleep. I was a bed wetter and my parents had me in diapers, it never bothered me to wear protection because no one made a big deal of it. Its all how you treat the situation.

My 3-yr-old goes to bed at 8:30 after using the bathroom. I get her up again around midnight. She rarely has an accident in her sleep, but sometimes she's racing for the toilet at 6 a.m.

You don't wake them up at all. You teach them to go before bed and then you'll just have to wait until the learn after that.
