1. Because you can't be a dummy and perform at the level the armed forces requires. The militaries of the U.S. are very technically advanced now.

2. They need to see some motivation. The armed forces aren't interested in individuals who want to suck the teat. they need people who are personally motivated. If you didn't finish high school or get your GED, you are a loser and not good enough for the military.

I didn't join the Armed Forces when I was younger. I wish I had, now. Some of my best friends served and they have incredible experiences that can't be had in the private sector, even for someone like me who has made a good deal of money. How do you fly in a tanker and refuel F-22's or drive an M-1 Abrams unless you serve in the military?

Get your GED and make a life for yourself.

You must exhibit that you have a command of some writing and reading skills to say the least. Would you want someone who only has an 8th grade education? This does not mean they would not make a good employee or military person, but obviously there ability to study and comprehend materials required would be practically nil.

In the Air Force they will not accept the GED any longer unless you test higher than 60 on the ASVAB.

To ensure that you have at least a basic education. Regardless of what MOS you get into, they all require some technical competence. Having some baseline of education helps ensure a higher completion rate during training.
