Atheism is just one of the paths that a person can chose to walk.
It makes no difference to me if you want to give it an additional label but personally I think all labels are over rated!

Scientists have beliefs. For example, physicalism is believed by many scientists. The question is whether you are required to accept these beliefs to become a scientist. If yes, whether the scientific method works well is irrelevant, it becomes pretty much like a religion with some good aspects within it but additional beliefs. The situation is not as clear with Science as in the case of Christianity where a belief and the acceptance of Jesus in your life defines you as a Christian.
There is also the notion that one meaning of religion is a link with God or Gods. Unless the laws of nature are Gods, science would not qualify as a religion. On the other hand, really, the laws of nature are like the Gods of science. The key point is whether the laws of nature come with some required beliefs as in the case of deities with religion. If the laws of nature come with required beliefs (such as physicalism), then science is clearly like a religion.
In any case, I don't know why but especially here in R&S the word religion is pejorative. I have even seen a Christian woman saying in her answer that Christianity wasn't a religion. Apparently, she couldn't accept to be in a religion. In such a context, it would not be nice to say that science is a religion.

Personally, I do not see atheism as a religion per se. It is a belief--a doctrine so to speak.
This belief/doctrine can be a teaching in your religion with its new bible. And the mantra/ritual of saying that God don't exist.
Atheism is not a structure, but can play a role in a structure. Some forms of Buddhism are atheistic and have their own scripture, ethics, practices and ritual.
I am curious to see your Atheist Bible. I hope you do not imagine that it will be THE atheist bible. Someone else will just write another.
Good luck.

I'm an animist and an atheist in that I don't believe in any form of deity. I do however, believe in the soul. This is my faith, though I hesitate to call it a religion as it's more a personal faith than any recognised doctrine.
I agree with those stating that atheism is a belief system and a religious viewpoint. It is not a religion. The humanist form of atheism is also a belief system in that they believe that nothing exists outside the realms of scientific observation.

Atheism isn't structured at all. There are no official atheistic institutions or places where we gather. We don't have one objective set of moralities. Atheism is simply a personal descision that one makes based on available information and lack of evdience for a diety.
In other words, atheism is not a religion. It lacks almost all quaities of most religions in the world. It is the lack of religion and belief in god.

I have no problem with your belief or lack thereof.
However, as a speaker of the English language, I must protest. The words "atheism" and "religion" have meaning already. You can describe your belief as anything you want, but by twisting existing words into new definitions, you complicate things and confuse people.
For all intents and purposes, they are opposite of one another. Again, this isn't a spirtual argument, but a linguistic one.

You can invent a new religion if you want to.
You can misuse the word atheist as a name for it.
You will be joining a huge club of religions and cults ( about 40,000) so you will have a lot of competition.
Unfortunately, by all dictionary definitions of religion and cult yours will probably be the first 'religion' to be proved absolutely wrong.

It's more of a belief system, but not a religion, believe what you will, but just respect the fact that atheism to most is not a religion, but more or less the lack of. Also, when you get done with it, e-mail it to me!! ^_^

I agree that none of them are religions. I disagree approximately theism and atheism being philosophies although, they're basically labels for perception/disbelief in god(s). i think of deism could be seen to be a philosophy reckoning on how that is defined.

I believe that Atheism is the belief that there is no God, it in neither a religion or a cult. God allows humans to have their own opinions and to make their own choices. It is funny, there are no atheists in foxholes, even a non believer will call on God when he or she suddenly have massive chest pains or a body organ stops working...

I consider it a belief system, but not exactly a religion per se...
Some atheists are actually agnostic . I have encountered some of these people. I'm not an atheist but I know that not all atheists are the same.
What defines religion? What are the religious practices of atheists? (serious practices) When I think of "religion" atheism does not come to mind.
