My husband is deployed and we're planning a cruise to Jamaica when he gets home. I have his P.O.A. but it doesn't say anything about applying for a passport on his behalf. I just want to apply for it and when he gets home, he can sign for it himself. The delima lies in the fact that his leave starts almost as soon as he gets home so we need to be on the ship right away and we won't have time to apply and wait for the passport when he gets here. We need it BEFORE he gets home. I was just wondering if there's anyway I can get him a passport, or is it still true that he can still travel with only his active duty military id. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance...

no. he has to apply for it in person. if he comes home after 2008, he must have a passport to travel by sea. If the cruise is prior to 2008, you will have to check with the cruise line on their policy, some have already begun requiring passports even though the deadline has been moved to 2008.

it is HIGHLY discouraged that he travel on the military ID. in fact, in some instances it is not allowed.

As far as I know he should be able to travel with his active duty military ID just fine, but if not, it might still be easier for him to get his own passport through military channels than for you to do it on his behalf. Either way, have a great trip!

Your husband can get a passport in Iraq. All he needs to do is get to the Embassy in Baghdad, and they can take care of it for him. It will be much quicker there than in the states. I know several people that did this while I was deployed there last year.

As far as I know passports have to be applied for in person with a passport photo. At least that is the way it is in Canada.

I retired a few years back, but I used to travel with just my military ID. Check with Customs. The number is listed in the government section of your phone book.

It's quicker to get a passport OUTSIDE the U.S. than it is to get one inside the U.S.... if he goes to the American Embassy in Baghdad, he can get one in a matter of hours instead of the 6 to 10 weeks it takes in the U.S.

If he's in the military, that should have all been sorted out when he enlisted. Why not contact his unit's officers here in the U.S. and see what they can tell you.

He might be able to travel with his military I.D., or he can get one at the Consulate of the country he's In.
