Haters use all means at their disposal, including the bible. Conversely, a true christian will use the bible to spread peace and love.
It just depends in whose hands the weapon is.

Well first of all, the scripture is only meant to be used as a weapon against Satan and his fallen.
According to Ephesians 6, our war is not with flesh and blood but against Satan and his demons.
Now admittedly, I'm part of the true love waits movement.
If you were to read Josh Harris' book called "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" and Ed Young's "Rating Your Dating While Waiting for Mating," you'd totally spot where I'm coming from.
Anyhow. There's an old saying among several churches. It goes, "Truth spoken in the wrong season brings harm."
I'd add to that, "Truth spoken in the wrong way slams and locks the door."
Now I admit, I am Sola Scriptura. This doctrine was uplifted by the leader of the Protestant Reformation when he was brought on trial before the Catholic Church for not embracing all Catholic traditions. This leader, Martin Luther, is why we have Protestant churches today. He is also a major factor as to why there are several freedoms in the West today.
Lutherans today still embrace his teachings.
In closing, truth is truth but truth's presentations must always be done with care.

First you have the hate. Then you have the effort to justify it by using the Bible. Homophobia is a perfect example. It's a type of hatred. People are not born homophobic, they learn it and choose to remain in that sinful state. Once homophobia has taken hold of them, they use the Bible to justify it. Clearly, it's a sin, because it leads to harm against others. But those caught up in this sin are blinded by it and refuse to admit it's harmful or do anything to leave this sinful state. Their pride blinds them to the truth.

The bible is a love story, more or less. God is love and He wants all to come to Him and be saved from hell. God is also just and hates sin. Why focus on the judgment and not the love?

Because the Bible itself sanctions it. I've read and am starting to re read the thing.
Well, maybe that is going too far. The Bible does have some very harsh punishments for various acts but as for out right sanctioning hatred... I don't think so. Violence, oh yeah.

Ignorant people will use whatever is at their disposal to spread hatred, unfortunately even the bible.

Oh, now, when I read your question I thought you meant all the neo-atheist trolls here spouting off their hate for Christians in poorly-thought out answers that have absolutely nothing to do with the original question. So sorry.
