Anyone can claim to have heard sounds from hell. I personally think that the belief that hell is in the center of the earth is ridiculous, but there are many people who do believe that because there are scriptures that imply that.
"For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly: so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the HEART OF THE EARTH. "
Ephesians 4:9, says of Jesus: "Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the LOWER PARTS OF THE EARTH."
Those are just a couple. The guy who wrote the book "23 minutes in hell" listed all the scriptures that referred to hell being in the center of the earth, there were quite a few of them.

Any true follower of Christ knows that hell is in the center of the earth; however I don’t think anyone has every dug deep enough to hear screams coming from hell. †

This is one of those classic urban legends. You hear someone talk about it every now and then. That and the soul weighs 21 grams. Those are a couple of classic religious themed urban legends.

There was a special on PBS years ago where someone dug so deep in the earth that wails and moans were heard and they covered it back up.
