My Great Uncle died in World War II. My family is quite closed lip about it, due to some bitterness about the war and the loss of my Uncle. I am a huge history fan and would love to find out more information about my Uncle, what he did in the war, where he died, and if he is buried anywhere. Does anyone know of any websites or informational pages where I can find out more information about my Uncle.

From what I have found out he worked with the
533rd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment
**I am really curious to find out what he did in the war

His name is Lester Lavern Zornes or Lavern Lester Zornes.
I am really not sure which as my family will not talk about him.

Any information websites or anything would be a lot of help!!

THANK YOU!!!!

Use the link below. If his records weren't destroyed, they'll have what you're looking for.

I also found a link to his units webpage:

My great uncle died in world war II as well. I have only been able to find a few things that weren't really of any help, but if you go to the site listed above you should be able to find out more. Just so you know though you will be able to get a lot more information if you have the next of kin (such as a brother or sister) request the records. This is what I have been waiting to do, ask one of my great aunts to fill out some paperwork to get the records. Considering your family wont talk about it though I am guessing this isn't an option for you. You can still fill out a SF-180 form, this will get you some records though they may not be as extensive.

I don't know if this will help at all but here is a site where I found some of the basic information about my great uncle (rank, service number, etc.). It only has records of casualties buried in overseas cemetaries but I thought I would include it in case it could help.

Good luck in your search. Our veterans deserve to be honored for what they gave. I hope you are able to find the information you are looking for.

The source below is for the 533rd's web site. It has a chronology of their founding and all the campaigns they participated in in the Pacific Theater. It also includes a method of contact to get more information on your great uncle.

You can google the regiment to see what it did in it's entirety as for your uncle I would just say to do what the people above me did. I stared your question so a friend can find it. She tracked her uncle overseas but I'm not sure how she did it.

That's pretty sad that they wont talk about him and recognize him as a hero.

I guess you should start with the military archives in Washington D.C.

I'm also pretty positive you could call the military and they could tell you the best research sources.

Best of luck. I hope you find out what he did and what a great service he provided for our country.
