does it make them any bigger of a person, by doing that? If they really wanted to point out someone's fault, can't they do so in a respectful manner?

You don't ASK for sympathy. You don't go around asking people to pity you.

I think it depends on what they are asking sympathy for. Sometimes instead of a pity party, a person needs a kick in the pants to see that things aren't so bad, and that maybe, just maybe the problem was their own making in the first place.

Usually, because they aren't capable of showing sympathy. If the mode of communication rises above normal chit-chat, people become uncomfortable. That is no excuse to scold, however.

Well, this is also partially due to the Yahoo! Answers format. You can type something in a perfectly matter-of-fact way, but someone else could read it as you scolding and/or being mean. And some people are just jerks. *shrug*

Asking for sympathy is generally frowned upon.
Everyone has problems. People expect you to deal with your own. Few people really want to hear others "whining"...that's what people perceive it to be...whining.

I never understood that either. My husband does it to me all the time. It gets really old hearing it. I like to think that I empathize with people when they hurt.
