It seems that A LOT of male law enforcement personnel have mustaches? Is there something culturally that tells LE officers/deputies to grow mustaches, or is it just a coinsidental observation? I am not trying to be bias or reinforce a stereotype. So serious answers only please. Thank you for your input.

Limeston is closest to the truth that I can find here so far. When I came on the job in the late 70's the first thing personnel told me is that my full beard would have to go. Not until the mid 80's were non Black male officers allowed to have beards, even the Black guys had to have a medical excuse and they did not allow White guys to use the medical excuse until then. Only when I was a semi undercover guy was I allowed to have a beard.
Anyway that is why I and many I know had mustaches, even our mustaches had to be well trimmed, never going below the upper lip.
I was 30 when I came on and actually wanted to look younger, it was embarrassing when you, as a recruit, were the one that the victim looked to for help while ignoring the experienced, but younger looking, training officer.
I'm sure most departments still have rules against beards.

Kissing a cop without a mustache is like eating a boiled egg without salt. And that's why

well, most police officers are barred from having beards and long sideburns for a multitude of reasons. so many just go with the only thing they can have, a mustache.
beards don't allow for a full seal with a gas mask, when pepper ball guns are being engaged and will cause the officer to breath all of that in. also, somewhere, sometime, someone said, children don't respond well to grown men with facial hair.

Probably because there is no restriction against it, where there is usually a restriction in regards to hair length or the wearing of a beard. If a cop would normally rather have a beard or longer hair, it's a compromise. I know that some older cops often tease younger cops for looking young, it's a way to look older.

Well, at this point I think it's just tradition. Like sailors and tattoos. But, it does make young cops look older, and grizzled cops look even more intimidating, so it does have function.

It may have to do with the area that you live in. Most of the guys in my area (rural Maryland) don't have them. That goes for city, county, and state.

It's very sexy. They are going on the whole macho look and it works for them. I love men with facial hair. OR maybe they have it because they're outside so much it keeps thier faces warm. But I would go for the first one
