A gypsy is ethnically someone who was born into a Rroma or Romani family. If you are ascribing to the idea of nomadic people who travel, then yes, you can become a 'gypsy', but the term is consider offensive by those of us who actually have the heritage. You can't BECOME one, and frankly I don't see why you would want to, as it's a much maligned and acted against group.
And the mandolin baptism bit is just stupid.

Its not a religion its an immigrant in a country like a nomad, it has to do with social status not religion gypsies can be muslims, catholics, hindus etc . . .
