how much money can they get from me in court?

It is also a question of what they can do to you. Is the dog up to date on its shots? (If not, it will most likely be quarantined to make sure it hasn't got rabies) Was it running loose, off your property, unleashed? Was the person on your property without your permission? Was it a child? Different cities/counties have different laws. Is this person a friend? If it were me, I'd gladly offer to pay any doctor bills. Then, I would take my dog to a training class. You need to have your dog in control at all times. (Fenced, leashed, etc) Also, the outcome might depend a bit on the breed. a poodle bite (known nippers) might be looked upon a little differently than a pit bull or Dobie. Any way you look at it, you are responsible for your dog's actions.

Addendum: Yes, the cops can do something...you can be ticketed and fined if there are leash laws and you've broken them.

Wow, your dog bit someone and you are worried about the money that the court can get from you?

You should be a lot more concerned about the person that was bitten, and if you have your dog legally registered and up to date on its shots.

Depending on where you reside, and the laws there; you will be responsible for all of the victims medical expenses and you will either have your dog put down or pay fines to the city or state: your dog could also be impounded and then the court will decide the outcome.

If your dog is unregistered and does not have it's shots up to date, you could face further fines from the court, as you have not proven yourself to be a responsible pet owner.

I hope that the person who was bitten doesn't develop further complications down the road.

If you do not have papers to prove your dog has been vaccinated against rabies, they will impound your dog for 10 days and you will have to pay to have it impounded.
I think you should pay for any medical attention the victim of the bite recieved. Then sit back and wait to see if they hire a lawyer and soo you.
Then they make fine you for failing to contain your animal (animal running at large) which I believe varies from $75 to $500 depending on which state you live in.
Im sad that you are only worried about your dog. You need to show more concern about the victim. A judge has the right to euthanize your dog if they can prove its vicious.

A lot. And they can take the dog and have it destroyed.
There are lots of things to consider--
Is the dog vaccinated and tagged?
Was she running loose?
If she was loose, you will be in much more trouble than if the person came into your yard without permission and the dog bit her. If this is a pit or other dog that is considered vicious, criminal charges can be filed in some states.

Your dog may have to be quarenteened (sp???) and there may be a "Dangerous Dog" court date to find out if the Judge sees your dog as "dangerous" and a "threat" to others.

In some cases, dogs are put down depending on the seriousness of the incident.

Just be cooperative, and offer to do whatever you can for the bite victim.

GOOD LUCK! :)

the dog will be under quarantine for 10 to 14 days. then you will probably have to go to court to see if they decide your dog is dangerous. there they will let you know if the dog will be destroyed or returned to you. depending on the severity of the bite, you will most likely have to pay any and all medical costs. before you have to go to court, be a responsible pet owner and tell them you will pay for all medical costs. this way you don't have to pay for 2 lawyers (I'm sure if it does go to court they will also sue for lawyers fees and court costs) so save yourself some money.

There will be a hearing to determine if your dog should be classified as a "dangerous dog". He will most likely be taken from you for a while, perhaps indefinately, to judge his behavior and things like that.

She can sue you for medical bills, but I doubt she will get much else unless she declares that she is going to need therapy and wants you to pay for it, or wants salary compensation if she is kept from her job on account of the bite.

The state may extract many other fines and fees from you, however. They will fine if he is not up to date on rabies, does not have a dog liscense from your resident state, broke a law requiring you to keep your dog on a lead or restraint, etc. Look up your state laws regarding animals.

The cops can;t do anything per se, except report what happened. The victim can sue you for emotional trauma, medical costs and a judge could order your dog to be put down. Depends on your local laws.

i hate to say it but the absolute worst thing that could happen is they could take your dog and euthanize it, which is the worst. the Cops themselves cant do anything its the person the dog bit, if they choose to take you to court.

they can have the animal put to sleep, if they press hard enuff. it all depends on how it happened, was the dog on a leash, was the lady trespassing, did you dog get loose. i mean how bad could this lady have pssible gotten hurt. but worse case they will put your dog down.
