Yup we are working on that.
A series of GPS air routes which will be air roads are being created and these roads will be visible only by computer. However cars will travel by these routes controlled by computer.
There is still the problem on how to make cars fly but that will not take long to deal with...

I can not see it in the foreseeable future, and Im a pilot.
The systems required to operate something like that in a real environment are extremely expensive and require much training.
It would require an automated system to avoid other vehicles, such as TCAS, but those cost tens of thousands of dollars, and only work when the other craft has an operating mode C transponder.
It would need some sort of radar, to detect other aircraft and to detect weather, and those are also extremely expensive.
There are satelite uplinks to nexrad radar, but they can be unstable and out of date in many cases.
You would also require a radar altimeter to tell real distance above the ground, and some sort of system that would keep the craft from flying below the off route obsticale clearance altitude (OROCA), which is in place to keep aircraft from hitting anything tall, including terrain.
Landing would be hazardous, not only because you would need to avoid all sorts of objects, but also because there are all sorts of things that can be sucked in to the engines and destroy them.
It would take at least a helicopter rating to operate one of them, and that is particularly difficult to do when you are going to school for only that, let alone trying to work and have a fmily or whatever.
Then there is the problem with drugs, you just couldnt keep close enough watch on everyone to make sure they werent drunk or high.
I dont see a flying car happening anytime soon, if ever, and if it does it will only be available to helicopter pilots.

Go find John McPhee's book, the Deltoid Pumpkin Seed. The semi-lighter than air craft was actually developed half a century ago. The idea was compressed helium in the outer skin made the craft actually aerially buoyant, so it planed at a mere 15 miles an hour. Prototypes were successfully flown for ten years. the craft worked perfectly well.
The FAA decided it was too dangerous, and maybe they were right. Can people in general be trusted with flying cars, considering how little they can be trusted with cars just confined to roads?
Consider the Auto-gyro, the personal family helicopter, popular with the upper class in the thirties. Hundreds of people got beheaded by these... which is an ironic way to keep down the aristocratic class, I think.
here's more information about this fascinating aerial technology:

Sounds like the same naysayer as with the automobiles in the early 1900s,
"a person can never go faster than a horse can run"
look at the automobile, from the earliest invention in 1771, a steam car a whopping 2.3 mph.
1880-1890 gas engines used in cars
1901 Olds began production of his car
1908 Ford introduces model T
1927 Ford stops production of model T at 18 million units
so it took the gas powered car 50 years to become popular...probably about the same for flying cars
invented 1990s popular 2030

They already exist, Like the aero-car he mentioned. Nobody wanted to buy them so it is unlikely that a flying car would ever be put into production.

I don't think we will have them readily available. Look at the car traffic and air traffic problems we have now. Do you think we could keep millions of flying cars from running into each other?

1949 or 50 I think. The Taylor Aero Car was certified and we were promised one in every garage. Since it hasn't happened I am of the opinion it ain't gonna happen.

we have them for a few years now

does not mean you can fly one. Just like we have electric card for a very long time now, but when was the last time you have seen one. It has been a long time for me. Someone does not want them on the roads! Same principle applies to flying cars.

Most likely never...
they are to dangerous, would require alot of fuel and impractical.
What's more likely is a system of super fast automated cars.
