Rats!!! I've had just about every rodent you could possibly imagine and rats are my favorite. They are like little dogs. They bond to humans and love you just like a dog would. They learn tricks better than a dog and come when you call them. I do suggest that you get atleast 2 though. They are very social animals and love to have play mates. I have two boys Skeeter and Fuzzy and wouldn't take anything for them. I do suggest not getting them at a pet store. I'd buy from a individual who has handled them so their friendly and not scared of humans. Fuzzy and Skeeters parents came from a pet store and were extremely skiddish. So when they had babies I handled them from day one and ended up with 7 very sweet babies. They all have wonderful homes now. 2 with me. When I put my hand in the cage they are excited to see me and run straight to my hand to be picked up. You'll love them. I really hope you'll consider a rat.

Gerbils: I've heard mixed things about them. Some people say they're difficult to tame, others say they're lovely. Either way, if you do get them, get a pair so they can keep eachother company.
Hamsters: Definitely not at the top of the list. They're less friendly than just about every other rodent I can think of (and some are aggressive).
Mice: A little fragile and skittish, but they make good pets overall (and pretty cheap).
Guinea pigs: I've only heard good things about them =). Apparently, they're very vocal animals, and sweet.
Chinchillas: Heard they're good pets.
Degus: Not sure--I don't know anyone who owns them.

Rats: Very friendly and intelligent, and my personal favorite. If you want rats that will grow up to be cuddly, get a pair of males, and if you want rats that'll stay playful and energetic, get a pair of females.

...And a trio of siamese rats: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8b/Rat_siamese.JPG

(NOTE: Rabbits are lagomorphs, and ferrets are mustilidae--neither are rodents. Both do make good pets, esp ferrets, although they take a lot of work, and many rabbits hate to be picked up or held.)

I have to go with the guinea pigs. Not long after I started actively drawing in mid-2003, I drew my son on the back of a giant guinea pig. It's nowhere near my best picture (I have gotten better) but since the piggie was based on a guinea pig we used to have, it's a keeper nevertheless.

You should deffinatly get a guinea pig!
they are great pets!
i have 2 and they are so nice.

all you need is a large cage. (www.guineapigcages.com)
bedding (fleece, Carefresh, Newspaper, NOT WOOD!)
food (dry, Veggies!!, fruit)
water
timothy hay
hut of somekind
and that is it.

if you do not want.......
a large cage, lots of waste to clean up, and love....
dont get a guinea pig

if you want......
LOVE, a cuddly friend, a pet that you can interact with, and an easy pet to take care of (on a scale of 1-10, guineas are a 2)
then DEFFINATLY get a guinea pig!!!

hamsters are also good
they need all the things that guinea pigs need, exept smaller.
smaller cage,
not as much food,
not as much holding, (they still need to be held though)
hamsters also need excize balls and wheels, until guinea pigs how SHOULD NOT, have those to things.

also if you get a guinea, get a girl.
MAKE SURE YOU DONT GET HER FROM A PET STORE!!
she might be pregnant.
get her froma shelter.
you can get a boy, but they might fight other ones.
also try to get 2.
they live longer and are happi ER in pairs (ER meaning they are still happy alone)

GOOOOODD LUCK!

Teddy bear hamsters are the best. they are so cute and cuddly and they are very gentle. Make sure you get a baby becasue they only live about 2 to 3 years.
