Hinduism did not spread anywhere--there is no concept of persuading people to join Hinduism.No ceremonies are suggested in the Texts for conversion also.If a person wants to follow Hindu Religion he is at liberty to do that.There are 1.2 billion Hindus all over the world--information is available in Internet.Once upon a time the entire Indian sub-continent was filled with Hindus only.In Afganistan,Pakistan,Bangala Desh and in India (second largest Muslim population in the world) Hindus were converted to Muslims after about 8th to 11 th century A.D..

It didn't spread too far from its origin point. There were in fact certain sects of Hinduism in ancinent times that dictated the religion cannot effect anyone not born within that area - its either foreigners
a.) Outside of the Dharmic cycle and will just die.
b.) Within the Dharmic cycle but unable to progress forward.

It pretty much stayed in India because hindus don't send out people to spiritually coerce others into believing in their religion. The Hare Krishnas heard of it through Indians who went abroad to study, got intrigued, and trekked to India to learn and become hindus. No intimidation necessary. Learn from them, christian and muslim people, learn from the hindus!
