A psychiatrist can prescribe medication, a social worker can't.

A social worker will probably to you more about why you feel a certain way and so on.

I have depression and anxiety, and need medication for it so I see a doctor. I have no need to see a social worker.

Your choice is up to you; depends on what you think you need. Maybe seeing both will be an option for you; it can be for many people.

It depends on what your needs are. Here are the differences:

Individuals might consider the following checklist of questions to ask and issues to consider when deciding on a professional and a type of treatment.

* Professional's credentials and training: consider the training of the professional and inquire as to his/her experience or expertise with the problem. If the professional is licensed in your state make sure the professional has the appropriate credential. The most common licensed professionals are:
o Psychiatrists, have an M.D. degree and can provide therapy in addition to prescribing medication
o Psychologists have a Ph.D. or Psy.D. degree and can provide therapy in addition to conducting psychological tests
o Social Workers have a masters degree and are identified by the LCSW license
o Marriage and Family Counselors usually have a masters degree and are identified by the MFCC license
o Other possible licensed professionals include Pastoral Counselors and Mental Health counselors.
o Some professionals, without state licensure, may be certified by their own professional organization.

Long story short if you are going to need meds prescribed to you a social worker cannot prescribe you meds. If you just need therapy a social worker might be a good choice for you.

Perhaps a psychologist -- he or she will help you without prescribing drugs, which is what the psychiatrist will more than likely do.

They're both good, but a social worker isn't as expensive.
