Are Christians and Catholics allowed to watch Harry Potter?
Doesnt it sort of suggest that Withes and Wizards which has always been condemned by their churches can exsist?
Before people start to say "its only a film" can I just point out the Bible is just a book to some people.
Surely watching things that are not allowed by your religion is a sin..no????

A jewish friend of mine loved bacon sandwiches, he saw religion as a lifestyle choice, he was one of the most together people I ever knew.

If you want to watch a film or read a book, do it, make up your own mind, don't let others tell you what to think, think for yourself

There's an interesting website for the CAP ministry (Childcare Action Project). It's a Christian site which has taken it upon themselves to give scores to all films regarding whether they are suitable for good Christian children to watch. A score of 100 is only achievable by something like Mary Poppins. Apparently some films have a score of 0 !

Just looked, and the first Harry Potter film had a score of 55. Not bad, but not brilliant either.

The site makes hilarious reading because they are so prissy about everything !!!

To answer your first question -- yes we can watch it if we choose too - we are free to watch whatever we choose. We alone decide which TV prog are profitable or not for us to watch.

To answer your 2nd Q - Christians already know that witches & wizards exist - and watching a film with these in it isn't a sin. It might not build us up in spirit soul & body - but it isn't a sin to watch it.

There is a scripture that says "If your heart doesn't condemn you" which means if you don't feel a warning in your heart it's ok to carry out whatever you may decide to do - Christianity is a heart changing and personal relationship with God.

Personally HP is not my thing i've tried to watch it but gave up after 10 mins - i do like Lord of the rings - so it's really about personal choice.
Hope i've helped you to understand Christianity a little better.

Whatever. Have you even read the books? They exemplify Christian ideals. What in them is a sin? the use of imaginary powers to help mankind? There is a huge difference between Harry Potter magic and wiccan beliefs. One is called fantasy. The other is an actual religion. I would hope some wiccans would stand up for this as well.

the christian faith is a Veeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyy wide concept
Some christians are moderates, some are extremists

There are some christians who shun Harry Potter books as satanic
Most (at least most in the UK) are more relaxed and can accept a fun work of fiction, as just that, a fun, work of fiction.

asking about catholics in particular , narrows it down a bit - but even so, there are a whole range of people in the catholic faith... AFAIK, the pope has never made any comment of harry Potter

Must we truly drudge up the same old arguments? This had been disputed about years ago when the books themselves came out. The vast majority realized that it is just a fictional book. And that it teaches some life lessons (friendship, love, etc.). The EXTREMISTS got all up in a hissy about it because there is no specific God character like in the Chronicles of Narnia. Where the lion is the representation of God and all that. But honestly does it matter?

There was a big fuss about Harry Potter promoting witchcraft, I think it was in the US.
But the books or films don't suggest that witchcraft actually exists, nobody actually thinks it is real.
Speaking as a Catholic, I don't see any problem with reading a book, or watching a film, unless its porn or something. We're allowed to be entertained too you know.

Actually you are wrong, it is a sin to believe and participate in something that is not real. The Bible is truth, and therefore not just a book, but Harry Potter is a fantasy, not real, just like vampires, werewolves and others, that are not acceptable due to their inception into that world and what they do to their prey, humanity, but are fiction therefore not real, therefore ok to read about.
Maybe you should try truth instead of menial things to refute.
God bless you and J.K Rowling for her vision to write a book about good vs. evil and that it gives the children and adults alike something to read and watch that isn't filled with true improprieties.

The Harry Potter movies suck. Read the books.

The witches and wizards in Harry Potter are not witches and wizards in any religious sense. It's like their job. Religion is never discussed, but they do celebrate Christmas and Easter. Children are smarter than we give them credit for. Books are the most amazing educational tool we have, and denying children access to one, especially one that has gotten so many kids to enjoy reading, would be a crime to my eyes.

Personally, I see no problem with Harry Potter. I love the movies, and I love the books even more.

However, everyone is different. If a person feels that it's a problem, then obviously they shouldn't read the books or watch the movies.

And yet...J.K. Rowling is a member of the Church of Scotland and holds Christian beliefs.

Personally, what I do and don't do is between God and me, not between God, the church, and me. The church is not God. God is God.
