Two Australian pilots are just about to land, when suddenly one says "Crikey! thats a bit of a short runway", the other replies "Crikey!, tell ya what, put the flaps on full, as soon as we hit the ground, apply the emergency brakes and then reverse throttle."
The plane hurtles onto the runway, emergency brakes applied, throttle on reverse, and just about grinds to a halt before they cut onto the grass. Both pilots take a sigh of relief (aswell as the passengers) and one exclaimes "Crikey! thats the widest runway I've ever seen!"

You ask for "should" so I assume that you are not seeking the legal requirements, but rather an opinion. There is no good answer because sleep deprivation in cumulative, some sleep faster and better than others, and all flight days are not created equal. IMHO a pilot should realistically get about 12 hours from throttle to throttle. This allows for 30-60 minutes of round trip travel time to the hotel, an hour to fall asleep, and hour to get ready in the morning, an hour to preflight and set the airplane up, and 30 minutes or so for breakfast. In this scenario, our imaginary pilot will have about 8 hours for sleep. Keep in mind that many layovers are in the 9-10 hour range, so you might imagine that many pilots are working on 6, 7 or fewer hours of sleep.
