A styrofoam block. Cut in half and mold the inside of both halves to the egg,ie(cut an oval in the center of the block) and glue the two halves back together. The egg must sit firmly in the mold without shifting.

Ooh! I've had to do this before...I used one of those styrofoam fishing containers that you can get from wal-mart, then I put a tone of bubblewrap on the inside, then I wrapped the egg in a cloth and put it into a small cardboard box (not much bigger than the egg) with bubble wrap in it. Then I place the egg container and egg into the center of the styrofoam fishing container with the bubblewrap all around. And I then ductaped the bubblewrap at the top to make sure it was all around the egg. Finally, I duck taped the top closed. The important thing is to put as much distance away from the sides of the container and put a lot of padding to help keep the impact from breaking the egg.

When I did this, I had a coffee can filled with soft materials and with a solder bar wrapped around the bottom. That worked. Someone else had a Tupperware container with some water in it, some pantyhose stretched across the top with the egg on it and the lid closed to hold it in place. That also worked (the container popped open when it hit the ground and the egg came rolling out!).

I like parts of some of the previously mentioned methods. This competition is held in this area every year. Most winners involve bubble wrap around the egg with additional protection around that. I like the balloon idea, especially if you can get helium balloons and balance them so it just gently floats down.

Get some of those long, skinny balloons people use for making balloon art. Inflate three of them and tie the ends together. Nestle the egg into the center of the three balloons and let it go.
Let me know how that works for you.
