I would recommend staying away from those "home theater in a box" kits. Most of them use a cheap DVD player with the surround sound decoder embedded in it - but don't allow additional inputs.

Instead, I would get the speakers and receiver separately. Although, at that price, you're probably looking at smaller bookshelf style speakers instead of normal full-height ones. Yeah, I'm in the same boat there - no room for full height front speakers.

for $1700 (about £850) you could pick up a nice marantz or yamaha (base model) for the cash and still have some change for speakers-i have three pairs of tangent speakers (£90 each) bought from the local currys that serve me well (i have a denon amp) the secret is to eliminate all bass from the sattelites-leave this to the sub. for a nice crisp sound. i reckon with a bit of searching you will find what you want for $1500.

With that budget... You will most likely be looking at a median based receiver, I would go with Sony, however, I always go that route. Speakers, I really like Polk audio, which you should be able to fit into that budget with no problem. However, I'd be bit more inclined to be a bit more open, meaning if you can go a couple to a few hundie more...I'd do that.
