I have a 96 dodge stratus and when I come to a stop my breaks squeal. Is there anything I can do to stop this?

Also my guages all don't work except my speedometer and hopefully the gas gauge. However if I play with the light switch or wait about 5 minutes it starts to work. The guages that don't work are the electronic mileage guage and the RPM guage and sometimes my speedometer guage's needle jumps. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

the brake squeek could be normal or it could be the warning tabs on the pads telling you to replace them. dust buildup, moisture, and low quality aftermarket "lifetime" brake pads or shoes can cause noises. the warning tabs are positioned to hit the rotors before the pads are completely gone so you don't ruin your rotors. get your brakes checked asap. on the dash problem, these cars were bad about the circuit board in the instrument cluster going bad. they are pretty expensive. it would be best to have someone diagnose it before spending the money.

I can help with some of it. First of all, the speedometer is solid state. If the odometer or trip quits, you need to have it sent in to repair or replace it. Secondly, the brakes are either worn down to the squealer or have a build up of dust on them. Go out on the highway and do about 3 panic stops to burn the dust off. This will stop the squealing. (until dust builds up again). If the squealing doesn't stop, you probably are down to the squealer on the pads. Replace the pads. The rest could be caused by to many things to try to diagnose here. Good luck!

on your brakes its probably just the anti warning devices that are going in to the rotors that's causing the squeal,it can even be the type of pad and the material its made of,as for the dash unit it can be the back of the dash causing this to happen ,but the thing i have found the most is the ground wire being loose on them, that will cause this to happen, the circuits boards did cause a few problems but not that many,i find more with ground wires loose or broken than bad circuit boards on them, either one will cause the same thing to happen though, good luck on it.,,PS if you can tap on the dash and make everything work on it again, its more than likely a circuit board bad,and you can buy a god used board for it cheaper than a new one.

Tap on the breaks to slow down, and turn your wheel slightly to stop the squeal... it is time for you to get your rotars fixed. I just had 4 rotors done and it was $300. (They were able to grind two of them, and had to replace the back ones. + New pads.) Good luck - get it fixed though.

Its time for new brakes. They are made to do that. Ignoring it will only get expensive.
