I don't give to charities; seen too many chairmen driving about in brand new mercedes. It tells me exactly where most of my money would go.
When I worked in London I used to buy tea and sandwiches for a group of homeless guys near my workplace and eat with them. Much more rewarding 'cause you get an interesting conversation and you know you've done a bit of good.

Charity: Merriam Webster online
benevolent goodwill toward or love of humanity
So in essence not just monetary but action or dedicating time to. If you mean monetary, I don't mostly because I do not trust where the money goes to.
I have to really know where the monetary funds are allocated to. In that sense, I can only give to those organizations which disclose every financial transaction. I have seen too many scams and con artists who take advantage of every tragic circumstance (from 9/11 to AIDS)
and pocket the money. I rather volunteer my time to organizations and actually go there to help. Although I am Buddhist I have to mention that, I see great work being done by volunteers from Christian Organizations. From Katrina to Iraq these people have dedicated their time and sometimes with their life. I think it is a highly noble act.
I am just saying that it takes more than money to help someone out.
Thank you for your question.

Charity is 1 of the 5 pillars of my religion.
ZakÄt (Arabic: زÙاة) is the Islamic concept of tithing and alms. It is an obligation on Muslims to pay 2.5% of their wealth to specified categories in society when their annual wealth exceeds a minimum level (nisab). ZakÄt is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
I feel great about myself after handing over money to a charity.
I regularly donate to Great Ormand Street Childrens Hospital as well as Imran Khan's cancer hospital (Shaukat Khanum Hospital) which is free to all those who cannot afford cancer treatment is in some of the worlds' best facilities.

Let's see I give to the cancer society and humane society. Also Healthcare ministries and Cookson Hills Christian school.Veterans orginizations and oh yes the Heart association. Also they have a lot of fundraisers here where I live for people who are seriously ill, injured or lose things in fires. Why? I think if a person truly loves God they will be helping their fellow human beings just as much as possible and it makes me feel good to give.

I generally give to secular charities. I give to none that use charity as a means to propagate superstition. I will give to religious organizations that promote secular issues, such as feeding the homeless. I've even helped out a church with making lunches for the homeless.
I've also given to organizations that promote issues that support issues I favor, such as separation of church and state, freedom of speech, civil liberties, and education.

I donate to local non-profit animal-related charities like the SPCA, or rescue groups that I work with.
Because I think the animals are wholly dependent upon us, whereas people at least can make their own decisions and choices.
