What would a recipe be like if we did not have onions? The distinctively pungent smell and taste of onions rounds out the flavors of almost any type of cuisine. For centuries, onions have added value to our cuisine and have also been thought of as having therapeutic properties.

Perhaps. You can eat them on food cold (salads) or chop them up and cook them with meat. On the other hand you can do the same thing with potato.
But potatos can be a side dish or a whole meal. Based on that I would side with the potato.

Not really useful ...... they can't sing or dance or make cup of tea, make the bed or whip up an omlette, they can't pick you up after a night out & they make you cry alot so I would say that they are versatile but not particularly useful .....

It seems like, at least they're very versatile, together with potatoes and tomatoes. There's hardly a regional cuisine that don't use them.
