Because many religious types are often the ones that cause the most hate in this world.

Because saying that "God is a non-existant myth" is an insult to believers. You're basically saying that we're stupid for believing. Am I wrong? If you just say "I don't believe God exists" that would be a lot different. Instead you put it like that. I'm pretty sure you can't consider "God bless you" an insult.

As an atheist, I believe that everyone has a right to their opinion, even if I disagree with it. For us to tell them their opinion is wrong and ours is right is hurtful and intolerant, which is exactly why I'm not religious. "God bless you" is said with love in their hearts and so I appreciate their good intentions, so it's not at all the same.

The christians are trying to carefully preserve their beliefs even they know that they do not make sense. When they see someone who openly professes to not believing, it starts to shatter their world. If it is possible for a large group of people to not believe in their mythology then there could be something wrong with their mythology. They cannot allow this to happen. It would disrupt their little dream. This is also why most christians refuse to examine the holes in their beliefs. If they ignore the contradictions or fallacies then maybe they will go away.

You are right! If they were true Christians (meaning reflecting who Christ is) then they wouldn't get offended. Think about it, have you ever heard of Christ having been offended about anything? NO. Ticked off, definitely but only when the "religious" leaders were twisting the word of God.
PS: I am a born again believer.

It doesn't upset me. I assume the people getting upset are the loud minority. As usual in most groups, the really strange ones try to speak for everyone. While the rest of the group just sits in the background, shaking their heads. Hey, wait a second... I bet your the loud minority in atheist circles. lol.

Perhaps it's the gratuitous swipe atheists take at Christians while they are espousing their non-belief. You know.. the "I'm so smart and Christians are so dumb" stuff.

I don't mind if you say that. Sometimes it's just said as an observation. Once in awhile it's said with malice. Maybe that's when some Christians get upset?

Personally not offended in the least, "God bless you."

They are not true Christians. I follow Christ and take no offense. We can't all go to Heaven. Can't say you'll be missed.
