Goofing around, I made a quote from a movie which referred to deafness. I get along good with my woworkerrs but this one guys face got a tad angry looking for a second, then we laughed a second. It was totally insensitive, I know to joke about anything like that but it was more the joke about the movie than the deaf issue, but apparently he hasnt seen that movie to even know what I was talking about. Yeah the guy is almost totally deaf that I said this in font of, and I feel like total crap. Any advice?

LOL @ Ryan...

But anyways, yea don't you just hate it when you say something dumb and only realize it was dumb after it's all said and done?

I would say just be very apologetic and sincere about the situation, everyone deserves a second chance right?

when in court to determine disability there are agents from Vocational Rehabilitation in the courtroom with the judge and your attorney. The VR agents determine if you can work and how many hours and suggest what work you can do and the judge will ask the person with the disability if they agree or disagree and why. A lot of times they say a person can work at least part time and they allow a person to work if they feel they want to or can and the SS office even has a program for getting people back to work if they choose, it used to be called "ticket to work". So sure a deaf person can work if they choose to. Of course if any disabled person works and earns more than a certain specified amount then their SSD benefits will be diminished by that amount. Some people don't work because it costs more to work than the income they would receive from working so it becomes something out of pocket rather than something earned, and then on top of that to have the money deducted from the SSD benefits well then that hurts the wallet. Why work if you're not making any money?

An apology is certainly called for. Write him a very personal letter (no emails here) and mail it to his home. Tell him how bad you feel for your boorish, insensitive behavior. Ask him to please forgive your lapse in judgment.

And you might want to enroll in maybe a sign-language class. Don't tell him until after you've successfully passed the class.
Thank him for his forgiving your lapse in judgment - and tell him later that it was because of the incident that you were inspired to take the sign-language class.

At least you will have tried to make good come from evil.

Just talk to him. Let him know that you were quoting a movie without thinking and feel you were insensitive. I'm sure he'll respect that and everything will be cool. Good luck =)

Unless the guy seems hurt or is acting strange towards you, I wouldn't even approach it. Just treat the guy as normal, maybe a little nicer, and be more sensitive next time.

I saw this guy once that had both his earlobes cut off. I went up and asked him "don't you wish you had your ears so you could hear like the rest of us?". He looked me square in the eye and said "Huh?"

Hire the handicapped, they're fun to watch.
