Now before you start jumping all over me, I'm only talking about out all men that practice a religion.

B-Krak, please don't get offended, I'm talking about mean who practice a religion, that doesn't include Atheists. And Thom, I'm not Pagan. Used to be, but I'm not anymore. And out of all the men I've ever come in contact with, the Pagan men were the ones that treated me with respect.

I can tell you that it comes from the recognition and respect of the Feminine principle as being an expression of the Divine, just as is the Masculine.

In the Norse tradition, in which I am best versed, the story of creation details that the first man and woman were created together, simultaneously, as two parts of one whole. Women were not created as an afterthought in a male dominated universe. It is by this understanding that Pagan/Heathen men honor the Feminine as it is expressed in the many aspects of womanhood.

Well...I know a lot of Christian men that treat their wives very well indeed. A couple of guys I work with really are about as attentive as I think one could wish. They have a different relationship with their wives sometimes, but that's a cultural thing I think. Their wives are kind of the caretakers of the home...traditional 1950's kind of arrangement. But, the men sound like diaper changing, girls night out kind of guys. I think they do a really good job, from my standpoint, of taking care of their needs in their relationships.

That being said, I also know some "pagan" types that also mesh well with their women. I think it's really up to the couple to make the rules that they will go by. Not sure that any one group is better equipped...and for those who say Christians are, I'd say not so. Most of the people that I know that treat their women like possessions are Christians...it's because they believe their role as being superior to a woman means they can treat them like a piece of property, and the woman has to take it...that's biblical opinion gone wrong, I think...but it's still there. This heavily indoctrinated idea of submission has been twisted to mean "doormat" for many. It's too bad.

You're totally wrong about that (or not being honest). Christian men are obviously the ones who treat women well the most. It specifically says in the New Testament that husbands should treat their wives with love and respect. Even unmarried Christian men tend to be the most nice towards women. There are too many "pagan"/Godless/non-believing men who treat women horribly. But I bet you know that.

Well they aren't the ONLY ones. I have seen some Christian men truly and deeply in love with their wives, giving them great respect.
I have seen atheist men down right worship their wives to the point it chokes me up. I get all teary....
Pagans in general tend to venerate women. We are bringers of life, protector of hearth. Some of the most powerful Divine's are Goddesses. Check out Frejya or even Frigga. These are not women to be trifled with. How can you incorporate honoring a divine woman with that much power and NOT respect women? We are seen for what we ARE, not what we SHOULD be. The one thing I have learned from pagan men is that being taken care of is NOT the same as being controlled. Being taken care of does mean I can't take care of myself. Being taken care of is done out of respect for who I am and my worth to the world as a mother and woman. That worth includes running my own life, and my families. I am respected for my independence, my intelligence and my spirit. So yes, I love the way pagan men treat women as well. Especially as a woman.

Joe: I swear you and Grim Jack just make me feel all warm inside LOL I LOVE you two!

I'm not Pagan, but based on the Pagan women I've been fortunate enough to talk with, I'd say because those women deserve to be treated well.

I will only speak up for the way my brother treats his wife. They are both christian and he treats her wonderfully. I understand what you are saying but there are good and bad men in all religions. My fiance' is a Catholic and he treats me like a Goddess. I think a lot of times it's how men were raised and also what they've learned from their life experiences.

I do hope that you find a man who will treat you with respect and love.

It's because we realize that there is a masculine/feminine balance to nature and that women are reflections of the feminine balancing factor. I'm a Pantheist Pagan.

Partly because some mainstream religions have taught society retarded attitudes to women...

Partly because many men don`t go out of their way to be courteous to women as they get accused of being patronising (is that right?) ,I have had the experience of pausing to hold a door for a woman, only to be snarled at for doing it.

But I think mainly because people aren`t as polite or courteous these days, to anyone other than themselves...

Cause they're not burdened by some stupid "Woman belongs to man" philosophy out of an outdated fairy tale book.

Quoting:
For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. (1Co 11:8 AV)
Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. (1 Corinthians 11:9 AV)
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. (1 Corinthians 11:3 AV)
Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. (Eph 5:24 AV)

And so on. How can you hope for someone raised with that sort of thing being rammed into their heads to treat women as equal?

While the pagan men cherish women as the bringers of life and as equals.

If true it's a unique and interesting observation.

I'm so bowled over by the question I can't tackle trying to formulate an answer.

Edit: As a pagan, I'm not so certain I agree with your premise. In town I only see bookstore pagans, and I've no idea how they treat their women.

But I've spent a lot of time among Native American pagans, mostly puebloans, Apache and Navajo.

And unless you have an unusual perspective about what constitutes 'treating women well', I think you're mistaken.
