im not sure what to think lol. ive heard that in many places, the number of non-religious individuals is increasing......but other times i have heard that Christianity is the fastest growing religion in the world...so that also means that followers are also in the increase!

Just because "religion" is growing means nothing. Think would ya because this is important if you really do "believe".
There are lots of false prophets out there and what I mean by that is just the average run of the mill person that says they believe. They go to church, they seem to be a "good" person. But what do you really know about them, probably not very much........But you think there ok because they say they believe in God.

Darlin, look at some of the people who "attend" to there sheep. The priests, ministers, etc. Those who preach the word of God and those people that are listening are doing so with there eyes and ears closed. Some of those preachers don't believe in God, how could they. If they believed what was written they could not so much say what they do and use him all in the same breath.

Evil, sin...all of it is and will continue to get worse, it is what eventually calls Jesus back. And to do that I believe it does have to get worse.

And that's why you and everyone that does truly believe in Him need to stay strong in what you believe.

PS I just heard this about a year or so ago and this is also something to remember. If you believe in what the Bible says regading Satin, remember this Satin as evil a thing as he is......believes in God, know's Him, hates him for what He is yes, but Satin believes there is a God, otherwise who's he hating? So even the devil believes in Him and look what evil he stands for.

Some christians claim their numbers are increasing; then again many muslims claim theirs is the fastest growing religion right now. People like myself, who are atheist, hope that our numbers are increasing - at least in the 'west' where we have more freedom of thought and more tolerance of others. It seems only natural to me that that freedom and tolerance, added to our continuing study of and learning from science, can only encourage the rejection of 'faith' or superstition. As I say, I hope so anyway.

One thing's for sure - the number of human beings on the planet is increasing.

It's hard to say, because the world population itself is naturally increasing exponentially, which it has been doing for some time. I really have to wonder how many of these statistics people quote work out on a PER CAPITA basis.

My personal hypothesis is that we're seeing a "reversed bell curve" of sorts: either people don't care for any particular religion, or are fiercely into a particular religion. What I mean is, the number of "mainstream" religious people seems to be going away.

I believe that confusion is growing world wide, because of all the dreadful things done in the name of 'religion'! It must be very difficult for people who haven't got a relationship with God to believe, when they see and hear His children doing the things they do!

To hear my belief in Jesus described as a 'fantasy', or superstition is very hurtful! Particularly when it is written by people who have not given Him a chance and haven't a clue what they are talking about!

He is not a 'prop', He is a Dear Friend and Saviour, Who Enables me to face life's problems head on and make the right choice for myself! As far as I know the main 'props' offered by the world, do not allow this as they addle your brains (drink, drugs, etc)!

The fact is that many keep quiet because as Christians (like the Jews) they are ridiculed, abused and generally got at for their belief (something not allowed against other religions, I might add!).

Anyway, I believe that the truth will out one day - and a lot of people will be left with egg on their faces!

The very fact that I am stating my opinion on the internet is a miracle in itself, because before Jesus Burst into my life twenty-three years ago I was like a cameleon with no opinion of my own! So Praise be to Jesus The Author and Perfector of my faith - and I pray that He will Bless you all in ways that each of you know cannot come from another human being!

Obviously, as education and income levels rise around the world, more and more people will see through the irrational beliefs and primitive superstitions of religion. Thus, religion will experience a massive decline in areas where life is relatively "good" for the population. However, in areas where ignorance, illiteracy, poverty, and/or unemployment prevail, one can expect religious ideology to dominate the region.

If all things go well i think The number of religious people will go down. By all things well I mean that the world will become more stable and people will become more educated. It is a known fact that the more educated you are the more likely you are atheist. This I think should make the world less religious.

This is impossible to answer, in some Muslim countries it is forbidden to be an atheist, the count from these countries would not be a true figure, even in Christian countries people put their religion as C of E or Catholic but do not practise and even though they are not really believers they still name their religion as the one that they were born into.
Chris.

Yes, the number of non-believers is increasing. Humans have been emotional animals far longer than rational ones, and religion is based on emotion. So, religion is still strong as will be for a long time. However, we are progressing and learning how our world works, so there will be fewer and fewer religious people in the future.

Consider that not too long ago, people could be arrested and killed for being an atheist. Now that's only true in some of the more severe theocracies. So, we're making progress.

People are starting to recognize that religion is superstition.

If the response to the Religion and Spirituality section of YA is anything to go by then religion is the most interesting topic there is. All of the other sections of YA are really slow to have new questions and answers

interesting question

in the developed nations church attendence is down, but islam is rising

in the third world, christianity is on the rise because of missionaries

as far as non-religious I think that is difficult to judge because the word atheist has a stigma attached and I think that many people responding to a poll might say they believe in god even if they really dont
