What is your religion? : Unitarian Universalist

How do you feel your religion fits into your geographical area? It is a liberal offshoot of Christianity, and I live in the U,S. , which is predominantly Christian, so it fits well enough.

Do you feel of the norm in your area, or more of a minority?
Definitely a minority among the Protestant churches in my area. -Most of those are Methodist, Reformed, or Non-denominational.

How does your religion shape you as a person?: It allows me to question and change as I go along my spiritual journey. It causes me to be tolerant of other faiths and other points of view.

Do you feel that it defines who you are?: No. My religion is one aspect of me. It helps define me, but certainly is not all-inclusive of who I am.

Have you ever felt discriminated against because of your religion? Why?: Yes. Every once in a while I'll run into someone who thinks that I am in a cult or that I am destined for eternal hellfire because of my beliefs.

How do you feel towards other religions or towards people of other religions?: I think all religions have something to teach us. What I am not cool with is fundamentalism in any form. -People who condemn or judge others because their beliefs differ from their own. We're never all going to agree, but we can all be tolerant of one another.

I converted to Hinduism, and as I'm not Indian nor live in India, I feel I am not of the norm and are more of a minority :-(
I wouldn't say I've been discriminated against but I have been looked down upon because of my being a Hindu. I don't understand why. White people convert to Judaism and Islam and there's not a fuss....why is it such a big deal with Hinduism? I was a former Catholic and I don't really have any hard feelings towards that religion or any other, except when they try to push their beliefs onto you.

I am an atheist. I want to make it clear that atheism is NOT a religion. I feel that rejecting faith in superstitious beings "shapes me as a person" by allowing me to seek truth through logic and reason without being impeded by dogma. I would not say it defines who I am but it is part of who I am. I certainly have felt discriminated against. Atheists are among the least trusted people in the world. The word "atheist" has such a negative connotation, many atheists are afraid to admit their disbelief. I feel that all other religions, while they may have some good qualities, are simply irrational. Overall, I feel that religion does more harm than good. It is divisive, intolerant, and impedes progress in science. Some people would argue that religion gives us our morals. I disagree. I believe that there exists a standard of morals that is universal. To elaborate on my point, here is an example. The bible and other holy texts are filled with some terrible things. For example, the bible gets slavery completely wrong. There are many passages about slaves and slavery but nowhere in the bible does it say slavery is wrong or immoral. My point is that we are the judge of what is right and wrong in the bible. If one argues that the bible (or any holy book) is to be viewed as the best moral guide, he or she should be hostage to its contents.

No religion - atheist.

Even though I'm a minority it still fits into the geographical area I live in (New England). Being a more liberal area of the United States I don't get much backlash for my lack of belief.

It doesn't shape me; merely it is just part of who I am.. it defines me no more than my hair color or eye color. It is merely one small part that helps to make the entire whole.

I have no problems with people who are religious - my husband and family are christian. I dislike those that try to convert me and continue to do so after I say No Thank You. I am polite about it until the politeness is pointedly ignored. I also feel that religion needs to stay separate from politics and government institutions.

Methodist

I live in the bible belt and the norm is Baptist but the Methodist and Baptist tolerate each other...out of the loop would be the Pentacostals

When I have a mean thought or I want to really cuss someone out I stop and think WWJD and it honestly stops me from some bad feelings...then I "Talk" to Jesus about my feelings
So in a way yes, it defines me

NO...I haven't really ever felt discrimination in that sense however I do feel that when Northerners move South they think we are bible toting freaks..I have found a lot of people don't believe from the Northerner states in God and it never occured to me to NOT believe in him

I completely respect other religions, however it bothers me when they think their religion is right and mine is wrong
As Long as we all worship the same God, I feel that we are considered one religion

I think Buddha is an interesting religion, lately I have been very interested in other religions but I talk to my God and I will always will pray to him.

My religion is Christianity.
The USA is known for its Christian heritage.
A majority in my area.
As for shaping me as a person, the only goodness in me comes from the Lord that I follow.
I hope it defines who I am.
On the Yahoo Answers forum where many atheists exists - yes. Yes I feel discriminated against, but it doesn't bother me. I do feel sorry for and pray for the atheists.
I love all people regardless of their religion. I do go out of my way to tell them about Jesus Christ. I do this because I care for them. They don't think of it as caring.

i'm born i a Catholic family, but personally i only believe in god, not any particular religion ( cuz i feel dat all dese religious leaders r corrupt)
I'm an indian, so I'm definitely a minority! but it's ok cuz India is a very religiously tolerant country ( actually we'r very tolerant in a LOT of matters - goverment inadequecies topping the list ;-)
Not my religion , but my personel belief in Goid does shape me as a person , or so i feel. I beleive dat watever hapens, happens 4 the good & god has a bigger plan & an larger motive behin all the things he does. so if something bad is happenin 2 us, God has something good planned 4 some1 somewhere, dat will happen as a result of dat bad thing happenin...........dis belief makes me a very optimistic person!
i've never myself felt discriminated cuz of my religion, accept dis once my math techr was all like ' i dont know wat dede christians wear ! skirts ! even grown up women wear those! dont they have ANY shame ''
but if u saw wat she used 2 wear, ud laf ur head off at dat cooment!! all throgh the year i saw her wear only 3!!!! outfits, 3 obviously cheap outfits!!!!! every1 else in scool did 2!!!!!!
OK i confess i repeat outfits ALL the time , i love repeating my fav. clothes , but 3 in a year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! come on! + she was a math techr , in the secondary scool !!! dats NOT cheap salary ! i know it 4 a fact!!!!!
& even if she does have a valid reason ,dat chik was a complete b**ch !!!! so i dont give a damn..anyways, .apart frm dat incidence - never!
though i have seen my family discriminate! & i hate it wen they do dat , but i guess theve been brought up witha ver narrow mindset, so they cant help it!!!!!
I'm completely chill abt a person's religion! they can follow watever religion they want & all i care is wether they r awsome pepl or not!
cuz in de end all religions teach de samne thing...all pepl frm different religions pray 2 de same god , they only give God different names!

hope, it helps u on ur assignment!

1. - Mormon
2. - Here in this state and city... let's say a minority
3. - I love the values that my religion teaches, I am a convert... they are kinda similar to the values that my parents gave me when I was younger and it also encourages you to be faithfull no matter what and I believe that faith is everything you need.
4. - Yes, there are many people who likes to put us down. I lost a friend when he knew I was Mormon, we were in MSN and he spent all the night telling me that I'm wrong and all that and he fell apart from me.
5. - The first thing I noticed about this church is that they don't put down other religions. They teach you that you should love and respect everyone else and be paceful instead of starting a war. Many people say nasty things about us, but the church doesn't encourage to be in nasty arguments, etc...

We do not have a religion script. Reality, as it appears to you, is determined by the code that each individual unit is running. Part of your lesson for your class will be that this is the worst place to come for any real answers. Reboot the system and take your blue pill.
