I have a friend that has a female Yorkshire Terrier, and her full name is "My Little Half Cup of Mochachino" but they mostly just call her Mocha. :)

No one can tell you what type of breed you should choose, nor should they. You need to study the breed and learn it's characteristics, each breed (and dog for that matter) have different needs, personalities, etc.
Look for one that suits your needs and personality. Think about where you live (apartment vs. house) do you have enough yard for the puppy to exercise in? Are you willing to play and walk an energetic dog daily?
These are the types of questions you must ask yourself to better find a breed that you'll be happy with. Go to the website I listed as a source and take a dog breed selector quiz - it'll surprise you sometimes!
Small dogs often require a lot of attention, please consider all the ownership requirements before taking on such an important responsibility; remember you own that dog for life.
About a name, there are so many to choose from. Here's a few I like:
Boy -
Spot
Spunky
Henry
Sergeant
Monty
Buddy
Girl-
Gidget
Molly
Bitty
Sophie
Sandy
Tawny
I wish you the best of luck, dogs are wonderful companions and great friends! :)

First of all, I'd get a female, because Yorkies and Malteses are foofy, tiny dogs, and I always just tend to assume they're girls anyway, plus if it's a girl you can paint her toenails and put dog dresses on her, LOL.
Here are some good Yorkie/Maltese names:
Fiona
Priscilla
Simone
Princess
Elizabeth
Mindy
Pookie
Victoria
Marcie
Ophelia
Muffin
Penelope
Sarah Jessica Parker
Gwyneth
Rhianna

We had a maltese and we named him Conner McCloud after the highlander - he had this giant personality / bravado in this little tiny body. I like names that are a little out of the ordinary..
for a Female - Marie Claire, Gidget, Trinket, or Moxie
for a Male - Claude, Shaun,
but then again, you will need to see it's personality and find something that matches up to the dog - My poor dog has the name of Midnight Raven's Black Cherry Soda Girl - she came to me with her name and with all the changes in her life, I did not have the heart to change it....so we call her Soda.

is it's a female then call her : Layla, Mimi, Anya, Annabell, you can give her a name by her color or behavior, Lucy, Linsey, Marcy.
For a him you have this choices: Bruce, Jack, Robert, Michael, Jam, Jamy, Rex, Arkan, Lordan, Mars.
But it's your puppy when you will have it you will know what name you will give him/her. I know because I know someone you has kittens and i named them Layla and Bruce, and the owner loved these names. Funny that Layla is a wild crazy kitten and she is the aunt of bruce who is lazy but cute. Have great moments with your best friend!

I think you should wait until you actually get the dog and see what kind of personality it has before giving it a name.
You could pick the name "cuddles" and end up with a dog that doesn't like to cuddle if you give it a name before you know it.
