To allow all people in a country the freedom to choose what religion (if any) to believe in, and then create laws based upon only one religion's beliefs that all must abide by?

You're right. We should legalize murder, rape, and all forms of perversion. People should be thrown in prison for telling the truth, loving their neighbors, and digging wells in Africa for those nasty little orphan kids.

Better go back and do some reading. Try the Jefferson papers. Here's the bottom line. You are free to choose your religion. Now, society needs a solid set of rules. So, the founding fathers figured it out. God, and the Bible, are a solid set of rules. Now, even Jefferson said that the very freedoms they were fighting for would be the end of our country. What he meant was that the liberties they detailed in the early documents of our country can be taken too far, and then the country would fall apart. Sound familiar? The founding fathers all knew that once you took God out of the United States, the end would be near. Do you think we are moving in a good direction today? Or do you think that entropy is at work, and our selfish hearts have only hastened the demise? So, before you worry about the country, worry about yourself! What will be the moral government of your heart?

If you are referring to the USA, I think you will find that this is not the case. Everyone is free to choose and practice whatever religion or lack of religion they want. Now laws are made by people and follow the guidelines of our Constitution and whatever the normal (meaning average) moral guidelines are. If most people think it is wrong to have sex between people and animals then they might pass a law saying bestiality is illegal. That's how government works. It has nothing to do with religions, however it does have to do with the majority's moral beliefs. And without a doubt our laws are based on Judeo-Christian beliefs because the majority of the people have always been Judeo-Christian. That's why we don't have a law that says a man caught stealing bread will have his hand cut off and why we do not have a law that says that women are possessions of their fathers or of their husbands, for example. Those ideas go against Judeo-Christian morality.

I don't accept the premise of your question. Our country was founded by men, many of whom were Christians. Their deeply held beliefs, and the Bible were influential in the creation of our Constitution. It is a brilliant document that has made us become the greatest nation that ever existed on the earth. Practitioners of other religions would never have guaranteed a freedom of religion to their country's citizens. Now because you have the freedom to create any cult-like religion you want, you want the right to cast off the Christian principles that this country was founded upon. You're not alone. There are many who at this moment are attempting to re-write our history. If they succeed, our country will fall.

canada is exactly like this. multicultural beliefs all over the country. we used to be a purely catholic nation, now we must succomb to other peoples beliefs. its quite sad actually. regardless of the religous aspect of this question it just pisses me off in the sence that people come to my country and we bend the rules for them and end up erasing our own beliefs beasue we want the new comers to feel welcomed. that why i love the USA so patriotic and if you want to live there you are AMERICAN and you go by there rules. no changing crap for you, you learn to adapt to there lifestyles.

sorry for the rant lol

so yes i think that is fine, some person can believe in whatever they want but make them follow the rules the country already has set in place. now for the separation of church and state i do agree on aswell. the only reason is becasue to base it on some 2000 year old mindset is just moronic. make laws based on logical thought and everyone is happy regardless of religion.

The government should not pass laws that are based solely on religion. The government should be religious neutral. To pass laws that are based solely in religion is to discriminate against any who do not believe in that religion. Any laws like this will eventually be repealled. However, that process takes time and energy. Basically, the government is wasting time and money whenever it passes a law based solely on religion.

No this is not right.

A wise and prudent government knows that its people are vast and diverse, and basic rights should apply to all. Specifics are left to the laws and the courts. Religion (or lack thereof) must be left to personal choice as long as it affects no one in any adverse way. The separation of church (religion) and state is wisdom way beyond its years.

Strictly speaking, Most of our laws is based on the Jewish 10 commandments; it just happens that Jews, Christians and Muslims believe in those commandments. Of course there are other religions; then there's Pagans and Atheists; however, Pagans and atheists do think that most ...if not all of the ten Commandments are fair.,,,don't you think?

No....there must ALWAYS be separation of church and state.

All countries must be tolerant of peaceful religions. Those who use terrorism are not peaceful, and should be eliminated by their judicial branch of government.

(can you tell I am from the USA?)

No. Freedom of religion is fine by basing legistation on the wiles of any given church is stupid, prejudice and dangerous.

Neuwwwwwww.
But geez, isn't that kinda what we've got? When GW says Jesus Christ is his hero, and he won't approve funding for stem cell research on unwanted embryos, and most voters want to know what religion a candidate is, I think we're kinda screwed. It ain't right, but maybe one day we'll get to where we need to be. When even our money says god on it, it's going to be a long haul.
