No.

The M.O.T. expires at midnight of the date on the certificate. The new computerised M.O.T.'s mean that the D.V.L.A. know when your car's has expired and whether or not you have had it retested.

Despite some of the answers above, there is actually a £60 fine for driving a vehicle without an M.O.T. (but no penalty points).

No, once the test is due that is the date that the car must pass a new test. I wish there was a notification system though, similar to when your road tax is due. I know of other people who have forgotten to get retested.

Your insurance will not be valid if you have a bump with an expired MOT. One exception is that you can drive a reasonable distance to a pre booked MOT appointment at a garage/ test station.

There is no "grace period" as such.
However, if you do not use your car on the public roads, you cannot be fined (unlike tax). Or if you are not caught.

However, if you do use your car and have an accident you may find your insurance will fail to pay out because of the lack of valid MOT.

If you are stopped by the Police, they may be able to prosecute you for lack of valid insurance as well as lack of MOT, if your insurance includes a paragraph requiring MOT.

There is NO direct fine for not having an MOT...but if you are driving it...you will then have NO insurance (as it is part of their conditions that you have a valid MOT if used on the road).

You are allowed (as already said) to LEGALLY drive your car DIRECTLY to a PRE-BOOKED MOT appointment, but you are NOT allowed to drive it home if it fails. And by directly - this means you don't do your shopping & visit your mum on the way there!

It is an offence to drive a vehicle on the public highway without a current MOT certificate.

The only exception to the rule is if you are driving the vehicle to a pre booked MOT.

If you have the misfortune to get stopped by an ANPR vehicle (this is a police car that has a round blue dome) and the police consider that your car is not road worthy you could get a fine and at the same time police have now the power to seize you vehicle. So, I would advise you to have your MOT done asap.

You should only drive your car to a pre-booked MOT appointment. I do not know if they are checked but it will be if you buy insurance.

Only if you get caught.
Get it done now as no MOT means NO Insurance.
