Do people realize the gun is only as good as the shooter, hence why a cop with a 9mm will more than likely win in a shootout with a thug with automatic weapons. Cops trained acurate shooters who can shoot and kill with far less effort than some thug who employs the spray and pray technique

Being caught by surprise and being in a gun fight are two different things even if your father had an uzi and was suprised by some punk with a six shooter nothing would have changed.

A Police Officer can not predict was is going to happen in the future. The immediate available weapon is only his/her sidearm.

Hollywood shootout...cops were outgunned... they aren't anymore... back then all cops had were 9mm and shotguns...it was bouncing right off the guys bullet proof vest and they were actually walking towards the cops (taking bullets to the body) but it was bouncing right off them as they were firing their automatics...one trick they used to get the guy tho is when the man is on the other side of a car...the cops shoot the ground on the OTHER side of the car and the bullet will actually hit the ground...bounce up and travel straight in the same direction about 6 inches above the ground...if you watch the video that's how they nailed that one guy in the street in the leg...very good trick cops use and military...works on hard walls too...but...yeah...ever since they were out powered cops DO have automatics at the police depo and very few in the car for not everyday does a cop encounter a shoot out and when they do it's usually not an automatic and the guy isn't in kevlar ...

Well, I know I wouldn't want to have to face off with some thug with automatic weapons if I only had a 9mm. They can get off more rounds faster...so it really doesn't matter how good of a shot they are. I think cops should have better weapons than they do. My dad was a cop and I worried about some idiot taking him out over a traffic ticket every single day.

Google the North hollywood bank robbery. Two men with body armor and AK-47 rifles with armor piercing rounds held off several officers for quite awhile. If police are not outgunned then why did a few officers run to gun stores to pick weapons they could actually fight back with?

I will go on the side of caution. It's fine with me if Police want to carry an AR-15 or Shotgun in their cruiser just in case something happens where it is needed. Look at the North Hollywood shootout. The didnt have the proper weapons needed to stop two heavky armed gunmen and had to go to a gun store and buy semi auto weapons. I say better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

What they mean is that when you have cops out on the streets with a pistol and the crooks are carrying assault rifles with banana clips holding 60 rounds or more. Assualt rifles have massive rates of fire and can travel at 3,000 + Feet per second... NO body armor is stopping that.
That is why along with my 9mm, I carry a riot shot gun in the front seat and I have an AR15 in the trunk with five 30 round mags.
Point in case was in LA years ago where the two bank robbers with automatic weapons were firing thousands of rounds at police and all the police had was their handguns.

Having once lived in NYC and known 1 or 2 former and active gangbangers, I'd say you're wrong. On what experience or study are you basing your conclusions? Until you have more than your personal opinion to back up that claim, I'm going to disagree with your assessment and guess that perhaps you're not as well-informed as you think you are.

All shooters, even police have variable standards of marksmanship. There will be thug crackshots and police that shoot themselves in the foot as well as the other way round.

Lets see. I carry a Glock .45 auto, AR-15, and a Remington shotgun. Trained and very accurate in all. And lets not forget the awesome TASER! I have no worries.

Automatic rifles outgun pistols all the time and gangs make new members get millitary training now.
