The term "neuter" seems to be used exclusively for male dogs in these days. Did "castration" sound too harsh????
IMHO, "neutering" procedure applies to both male/female dogs.
Bitches get "spayed", poor guys "castrated" ,,,,,, can I be correct?

I work at a spay/neuter clinic and I can tell you that the look you see in the faces of men (and some women) when you say CASTRATION says it all!!!!!!
Many really think you are doing some little vasectomy on the pet. Something, anything other than THAT!!!! If they want you to explain the procedure, they stop you pretty soon!!!!!!
Neutering is applied to BOTH males and females, but has become atteched to the boys because castration is too harsh for people to take!!!!!!!
Sometimes we just use "alter" for everyone!!
The fact that someone invented NEUTICLES says a lot too.

Castration is a term used for both genders, but not frequently used in my experience. Dogs (males) get neutered. B&tches (females) get spayed.
And all dogs & b&tches, except show animals which will be bred to improve the breed, should be castrated or "altered".

People can use whatever terms they want for it....as long as it is being promoted. Perhaps the term castration makes people feel uneasy about doing that to their dog, which is why it has gone by the wayside.
I often used the word "fixed."

Frankly I dont want to hear it. The female dogs are known as B ithces and Dams, while the males are known as Dogs, studs and sires. I think castrated is too easy for you. It should be referred to as "hacking off" LOL........Now, have you ever known me to be PC about anything? Ain't gonna start either.

female = spayed
males = neutered
or "altered"...essentially the same thing - both have something removed. It's actually more difficult for females - they have to cut into the abdomen. With males, it's on the outside of the body.

they are both "alterations." technically "castrate" is the technical term for males and "ovariohysterectomy" is the technical term for females. but yes. bitches are spayed and dogs are neutered.

Quite correct.
I always shake my head whenever people write that "neutering" only applies to males.
But why is it only "poor guys"? Would not the bitches be "poor" too? Or maybe neither is really "poor"....
Methinks you're thinking of your own cojones there, and anthropomorphizing a little bit ;-)
LOL

I dunno.
I think of castration as losing EVERYTHING including the scrotum (which is rarely removed in dogs).
Good point though.
LOL at Bassetnut... too true!!

"Neuter" is no worse than "geld" (at least in verbal terms -- clinically, a whole different story !)
They all mean sterilization, and that's the important thing.

Concur with Bassetnut :)

Call it whatever, but it still needs done.
I got my dog chipped and clipped. That's what I called it.
He's microchipped and neutered.
