Posting for a friend.

She is recently divorced, have child together. Her ex and her didnt pay taxes for a few years. After the divorce they were working to get it all cleared up. Recently they had some money come in and they had to cash the check together. In the bank he told her they were garnishing his wages and he needed the whole sum of the check to pay back taxes. He had no proof of this. She gave him the money on good faith. Now, her wages are being garnished. She has asked him for reciepts and proof of the taxes being paid. He cannot furnish anything legit.

How can she go about finding out what they have owed over the time they didnt pay. What was paid if anything and when it was paid?

Unless he works at the bank, they don't know anything about his WAGES being garnished. Even if he does, the TELLER would not know, only the HR department would. The teller would know if his ACCOUNTS were being garnished. Your friend needs to consult a tax attorney. Based on what you ask, she doesn't even know what the question is.

Contact IRS at 1-800-829-1040. Ask for a :"transcript of account" for all years. This shows assessment of taxes and all payments. It probably will not show how the payments were made.

She might have a case for relief under the "innocent spouse" rules. See the link below.

The levy on her wages will have a toll free IRS phone number. She can find all about it by calling that number.
