Hi Sarah - i agree it isn't a religion but it does say religion and spirituality - so the spiritual side is recognised. Yes 'religion' does mean to be bound - but it's too difficult to explain it here. It's difficult to explain to people about having a personal relationship with The Lord - it's only when it happens to you that the revelation comes.
God bless and keep you. : )

Before making this post I read up on some of others' posts. First thing I notice is the large number of thumbs downs but this is perhaps because the question itself is somewhat ambiguous. Because of this it is difficult to know what to say so I'll just ramble on a little in the hope that I'll hit the nail on the head.
Religion is a belief system. Some religions are passed down to us from who knows where, perhaps going back all the way to original sun-worship or moon-worship. Some religions are pure inventions of humankind, especially those in the US; it's a good way of making money for the organisers, the self-styled priests, and the gullible are always with us.
Even the passed-down religions have been organised and re-organised time and time over and the original tenets modified out of recognition.
I call myself a Christian yet I often wish I had a stronger belief in Jesus. I am suspicious of all organised religion, I get the feeling that many of its priests and proponents are in it as a career rather than as true believers. And in mainstream Christianity the teachings seem largely to have degenerated into a sort of wishywashy political correctness rather than as a belief in God and Jesus.
I think that somewhere in the Bible's New Covenant, Jesus says something like "whenever two or more of you are gathered in my name you are part of my church."

Because those who are outside of Christianity don't believe you can have a relationship with Jesus so they class it as a religion.

Just because YOU think Christianity isn't a religion, doesn't change the fact that it is.
The word "Christianity" means the religion that follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. It is a label, having little to do with the personal relationship with Jesus. You are confusing words with spirituality. We must have words to describe our world.
What else would you call the group of people who worship Jesus?

It is viewed as a religion by the rest of the world.
if you have a relationship with gos it is the same as being bound to him. after all he did say "thou shalt not have any gods before me" this in and of it's self bound you to him when you excepted him as your god!

Very good question--and I agree, true Christianity is not a religion. A religion is basically rituals designed to please a deity--a system of works that you do to earn your way to heaven.
All that is needed to get to heaven is belief on Christ--SOLA FIDE--faith alone. You can't earn your way.
I guess it had to be lumped in with something, though.

You're correct to a point. The problem is that most people aren't just Christian, they are also Baptist, Catholic, Jehovah Witness, Mormon, Presbyterian, Mennonite, Protestant, .....

If you notice, this section says Religion AND Spirituality. 'Christianity' is an umbrella term that is inclusive of all 'religions' that believe Jesus is the Son of God, and our Savior, thus coming under the term 'spirituality'.

While I agree with your definition, not everybody does - that's why it's here.
I see Christianity as a relationship, where I see 'religion' as a set of rules created by humans, in an attempt to achieve a pleasing (after)life.
