I would use photoshop and 'desaturate' it which makes it a black and white photo, photoshop is a great program for editing.

If you have a Program like Jasc PSP, or The Print Shop, there is a function to change your photos to black and white. As well, you should be able to Right Click on your Picture, to print it out, Click on Preferences, a window will come up with options for printing Normal, Quick Print etc. somewhere in there you should see Print All in Black & White. Click on the spot required to mark that option. Then Click Ok, which will put you back on the print page. Click APPLY, then PRINT. When you have printed out the Black and White Picture, scan it and save it to wherever you save these things. Then when you need the b/w photo, you can just go get it.
I'm using a 3in1 Lexmark, so I can get the picture, scan within the program, change the colour, then scan and save to file. It's much easier for me that way, I don't have to print the picture out.
Hope this helps you.

in photoshop, either click on greyscale or desaturate, then you might want to have a look at the contrast levels, have a play as often black and white pictures end up very grey and not very exciting from colour images as the desaturated colour doesn't look as 'punchy' as the depth of contrast in black and white images. the great thing about photoshop is to get in there (use a tutorial if you really haven't a clue to get started) and have a play, just save a copy of your original image separately so you always have a back up, but you can undo the last 20 odd steps in photoshop so you can always undo!

for a simple solution, either download picassa (which is free) or use http://www.picnik.com (also free) both have the option of taking the picture and making it black and white. with picassa, you work directly off of your computer as with any other software and then edit it, and save it. pretty simple. picnik is similar, the only difference is that you upload the picture (like you would a myspace picture or something like that) and work with the picture online, and then save it to your computer. both are simple to use, you pretty much push the button that says black and white, and you're done. there are numerous other ways to do this, but if you're wanting simple, this is probably your best bet
good luck!

I prefer to do B&W conversions in gradient mapping rather than desaturate. Under adjustment go to gradient map and choose the B&W version. (There are several options there, some are pretty cool to play with.) Then I adjust levels or curves. Another option is to use channels. Either is better than desaturate, IMHO.

If you have any photo software, you can do it there, you can also sign up at Shutterfly.com, and store your photos there for free and they have free editing software as well. Otherwise most microsoft programs offer basic editing software and you should have that already installed on your computer.

Here we go step by step . . .

-Open your pic
-From the top menu bar click on IMAGE
-Scroll down to ADJUST for the side menu to pop up.
-Scroll down to DESATURATE and click on it.

Changing color to B/W you may need to increase the contrast to make it pop and look good. Do the same thing as before, but instead of desaturate, you click on BRIGHTNESS/CONTRST.

Ot instead of contrast, you can do something really cool and bring back some color. Like what I did for this photo.

After desaturating, you go to the toolbar. Click on the History Brush tool. It's the one with the paintbrush and the backwards swooping arrow.

Use that tool to color back in any part of your photo.

A lot of it depends on what program you use for viewing/editing your images. Most software will have a "remove color" or "grayscale" setting. If yours does not have that then look for "desaturate" under the color menu.

As an alternative to those options, several online photo labs (even Wal-Mart) have online software than can convert the image for you if you have it printed at their lab.

You need to have a program that allows you to put it in black and white. I know photoshop does and certain programs that come with your camera do. You can usually find it under the 'tools' section.
