Im very naive on religion - i dont really have that much of an interest in it, so my terminology is pretty awful - excuse me!

You know the 'head dress' that muslim(i think) women wear to cover their hair - why do they do this?

There are about 3 girls in my year who never show there hair, and when asked they say its to protect their dignity and they dont want people to think they are vain because its not looks that matter. This is a fair comment, but why the hair and not the face? By the way, they all wear quite a lot of make up, if this is not emphasising beauty then what is!!

So yeah, please tell me why the hair is rarely shown to anyone but the husband. And also, do they secretly look down on all other girls who dont cover their hair?

In Islam, it is required for all physically mature females to cover their bodies except the face and hands. There are verses in the Qur'an and historical narrations that support this requirement. It is agreed upon unanimously. The feet are a matter of discussion among the scholars. It is not required to cover the face.

Historical traditions that are raised up in support of the argument for the so-called requirement of covering the face are mistranslated and distorted by the literalist salafi sect whose deviated theology has cast them out of mainstream Islam.

Wearing a face veil is encouraged in the case of those who want to emulate the holy family of Prophet Muhammad or create another barrier between them and the potential for sin. At times, cultural expectations of women who wear niqab can become cumbersome. However, one who wishes to cover her face should not be discouraged as long as her intentions are sincere.

It is not acceptable for a woman to wear makeup without covering her face. If a woman chooses to decorate a part of her body that is permissible to expose, the permissibility of exposure is withdrawn.

Muslims believe that modesty, as practised by both male and female, is an intrinsic part of faith in terms of obeying God's commandments. It also has very distinctive social benefits.

Not all Muslim women cover their hair, first off. Secondly, in the Quran, Muhammad specified codes of dress for both men and women that are supposed to reflect proper modesty. There are similar passages in the Bible. Christian and Jewish women are supposed to cover their heads when they worship.

Basically you're making a big deal out of hijab, which is Muslim modesty in dress. You've probably been told about full veils and other such coverings that some fundamentalist Muslims force on their women in order to cloister them and control them.

Just keep in mind that many Muslim women are strong and even feminist and still choose to wear the scarf as part of their heritage. I've known quite a few.

Because if a man looks upon a woman with lust then he has committed adultery with her.

These women dont want men defiling them with their eyes.

Muslim women have several stages of (hijab) covering which they can follow as per their personal faith and strength.

The highest level is covering all the body with a loose shell (jilbab) and the face (veil).

The minimum is covering the hair (scarf).

Eye candy is only for the hubby.

Hair is a woman's crown of glory. Some women cover their faces, they feel it makes them closer to God by doing so. It's no uncommon to see a Muslim woman wearing make up but covering her hair, (I know plenty). I don't believe they look down on other girls who don't cover, maybe only among other Muslims but not non-Muslims.

It's called the hijab. Yes in Islam women and girls are commanded to cover their entire body by ALLAH(SWT) in the Qur'an and strong Hadiths. ALLAH(SWT) doesn't want men and women to appear like sex objects and to preserve their modesty and chastity. The Qur'an refers to women as diamonds and gold. In Islam women value their beauty so much that they only show it to their husband, father, sons, brothers, other women, and certain other male family members. Islam treats women like queens. Mothers are especially honored for their ability to give birth and bring life into the world. They shouldn't be wearing makeup outside as that attracts attention from the opposite sex so maybe they are not real Muslims; just Muslim in name only. The strong Hadiths state that when a girl reaches 9 years old then she should draw the Niqab around her face and not display her beauty to strange men. ALLAH(SWT) knows that women are mentally and physically weaker then men and the women need protection from themselves and from the world. Modesty is very important for both men and women in Islam. Naturally if you have a diamond you want to conceal it so it isn't broken or harmed. Well women(wives, daughters, sisters, mothers, etc.) are all diamonds of a particular family so they shouldn't be seen(showing any part of their body) to strange men who they are not realted to. Women are more likely to fall into temptation then men and are the object of a man's lust which is why ALLAH(SWT) commanded women to cover their entire body.

Well a womans hair was considered a BIG part of her beauty.

Usually tho, covered women are not supposed to put make up.

Thats against the whole concept of covering.

Hope that helps.
